Hilux has kept on top overall by selling a lot of those cheap workmate low rider 4x2's, which Ford isn't really interested in competing against, due to the low profit margins.

August 2015 was the first time Ranger 4x4 outsold Hilux 4x4, a feat it then repeated in September that year and since January 2016 it has won 27 of the 50 months, including 10 of the last 12 with the total 4x4 margin being 2,358 in favour of Ranger over the last 12 months.
Hilux stays on top as a 'nameplate' because the 4x2 model outsold Ranger by 7,169 units over the last 12 months for an overall 4,811 lead.
It had been close between the 4x4 models for a long time with the winning margins being small either way but it's averaged better than 200 units a month in favour of Ranger this last year.
