Jaguar Rebrands

It seems a weird thing to do a rebranding before actually showing any of the new cars, but we live in weird times.

For a bit of perspective, this is the moment where Jaguar ceases it's entire lineup and then returns with 3 new all electric luxury crossovers, at a much higher price point. This strategy was developed by Thierry Bollore who is no longer CEO, a few years ago.

I guess Tata just gave them too much rope as they say. They should've pulled it back when these things were being planned and a different direction chosen.

I can't even fathom what they'll bring out and how they'll justify their price point. Heck, even their current price point for many models are crazy (would you buy an Aston or a Jag?!). The F type LP or something such is $399,999!!!

I thought the Ford era was considered the better and the more reliable ones?
I’m not a Jag nut but I suspect many stubborn die hard fans (probably one foot in the grave if they aren’t dead already) consider post 1990 Jags the same as water cooled Porsches.
Either way I’d have an 1990s XJR or XK8/R in a heartbeat.

A lot of people don’t know the back story, J/LR refused every overture form Ford
to intergrate or even change direction or be told what to do with anything. DEW was
their development and they screamed blue murder when it was given to Lincoln.

Ford got rid of J/LR exactly because their product cycle upkeep was just too dear,
When TATA purchased J/LR for $2 billion, that was conditional on them agreeing to
fully fund the planned $8 billion product cycle costs. It was cheaper for a struggling Ford
to find a good home for J/LR than spend another $8 billion on them when Ford needed $20 billion.
The same went for Volvo sale to Geely, again funding a near $6 billion Product cycle.

The only one Ford should kept was Mazda, the Ford based Mazdas were way better than Ford Euro stuff.

I couldn't care less about the WOKE part, there was and will always be people who have those beliefs. Personally, I take no notice of it, so it doesn't offend me. Actually, the whole world could learn from that, there would be no need for WOKE at all then.

What offends me is the Jaguar brand has a sh.t-load of heritage and passion, but this new direction almost discredits their past, discredits what made the brand unique and desirable. The problem is, that uniqueness is not universally desirable, and never has for Jaguar. They tried to emulate BMW, but most wanted a BMW wanted the badge not the driving experience.

What I'm trying to say, Jaguar were never going to reach BMW sales volume. Not because the cars weren't any good, they were brilliant actually, but because the Jaguar image is different. And this is where TATA should have intervened and figured out a way to deliver financial success while maintaining the uniqueness of the brand for those who "got" what Jags represent.

So, I'm not sad because they decided to be PC, but rather they have abandoned their customers.

The issue isn't the weird advertising, it's the fundamental change in WHAT Jaguar is. They're abandoning their slot as a "Premium" (yet affordable) brand, and trying to carve out a new niche as some kind of all electric top-end "exotic"

I can understand their motivation. If you accept the premise that we're RAPIDLY heading into new territory, an all-electric market, dominated by suv-types, and with decreasing car ownership. Then hey may have feared getting caught in the logjam, and they have looked desperately for a way to keep distinguishing Jaguar. Especially since their sibling already have a strong presence in the SUV market.

But even then, I think they've gone too far down the rabbit hole. They've decided to chase the "progressive" market, realised that market isn't overall big on cars as prestige items, and so have doubled down and decided to aim for a very particular market.

Personally, I think they've missed a huge opportunity. Jaguars have always sold disproportionately well overseas, and that trend has been increasing of late. There's still a big market in America, Eastern Europe, and China, for people who don't want all electric.
I also get the sense that there's an increasing divide in the UK, with more people rejecting the spread of wokish thinking.

And ultimately, at the risk of greatly over-simplifying, if you want to sell CARS, then you're better off targeting the anti-woke market

"As part of its shake-up, Jaguar has launched a new “House of Brands” strategy to turn the company into a luxury brand to compete with the likes of Louis Vuitton.

According to Car Dealer magazine, there will now be fewer Jaguar car dealers in the UK as the ones left are upgraded to display “pieces of art” in their showrooms which customers visit as a “destination” to have a coffee.

There will also be a “curated brand store” next to luxury brands such as Dior and Louis Vuitton in Paris.

Handovers of new cars will be at customers’ homes or even “their favourite restaurants”, an insider told the magazine. Buyers will be “younger, more affluent and urban livers” who are “cash rich and time poor”.

Jaguar is also planning to close many of its showrooms, leaving it with a network of just 20 across the country."

If I want a coffee, I'll just stroll into a Jagwah retail outlet for a cup of coffee with a choice of 50 types of urban living varieties whilst examining an artwork that defies explanation.
They may even deliver my new Jagwah to my local Macca's carpark, as I am an urban dweller, whose luxury 1 bedroom renovated terrace house apartment does not have a parking area within a kilometre.
After delivery, I may realise that I am so cash rich and time poor, that I don't have the time to actually drive the Jagwah, as I am too busy buying fashionable items and looking beautiful at all the trans-urban gatherings.

According to Street Machine magazine, there will now be fewer AUII car dealers in Oz as the ones left are upgraded to display “goon of fortune with rotary clotheslines” in their showrooms which customers visit as a “destination” to have a beer.

There will also be a “Dan Murphys” next to brands such as Big W and BCF in Elizabeth.
