heres a thought for you
a while ago i had the opportunity to purchase a car that had been rebodied into a fresh shell in the late 80's, a shell that had been given to a prominent group C racer in the early 80's by ford after a rather spectacular crash, but had never been used now, if i'd purchased the car, then given it the appropriate paintjob and all the period modifications to make it identical to the car it shouldve been...... would it still be just a replica?

Not a red XE sedan is it?
Years ago when I was an apprentice, a friend and I called into Barnes Perfomance on the Sunshine Coast, where they had an XE road car that was built up from a genuine Group C shell. It was all seam welded, extra spot welds everywhere, and the wheel arches were larger than standard. Man it looked good, but 8 grand was just too much for me at the time. I wish I had it now though! nope, it was 2 tone silver
4Vman, the only reason it never raced was because immediately after the crash, the team bought an existing car so they could race that weekend

Good question. To me - yes it would still be a replica, especially if you had to modify & paint/sticker it up..
But if you were to repair the wreck & then repaint it to original that would be different - I think! |

Was it a certain green XE that originally crashed?

no, the original car was an XE ESP, the body it was reshelled with was supposed to become a group C car

Unless it was the actual shell that graced the track as a racecar (Racecar shells have CAMS verification doccuments to identify them). its just a replica...
It makes no difference what the shell was intended to be or what intentions they had for it or who owned it, at the end of the day it didnt race so it isnt the original car.

was the shell race prepped? It sorta falls into a gray area, it's a replica because its not the actual car, but if its a race prepped car its still a genuine racing artical.

Let me elaborate to make this clear. EVERY car that competes in CAMS sanctioned events will have a log book and a certificate of description.
That log book will describe the vehicle in question right down to its chassis number, if the chassis is written off or changed the log book gets an update or a new log book is formed with the new vehicle. Unless this particular chassis has a CAMS log book which identifies its chassis number and that exact chassis competed on race tracks, including details of which events it competed in then its NOT a racecar, and has no CAMS history. I.E its a replica.

are you wanting to know if you can call it a genuine xe esp?? or are you wanting to know if you can lay claim to an actual race car??

i know its just a rebodied ESP, and as far as i know, it never moved an inch on a racetrack, but from what i heard from a car inspector that looked it over, it definitely had a bit of work done to the bodyshell

I have to agree with 4Vman. If anything, it is a genuine race body, that is where it ends
