130km/h speed limit on the Stuart, Arnhem, Victoria and Barkly highways 110km/h speed limit on all other roads – unless otherwise signposted That’s a long way to go just to do 130 kph legally. If you’re in Sydney, the Great Western Highway on a Saturday night usually has an open speed limit or if you’re in Melbourne, Dandenong road in Doveton also has an open speed limit until the cops turn up. … and yes, I am joking.

If the police think that 130 kph is dangerous in the vehicle you're driving then they will book you. Anyone versed with driving in the NT will tell you to watch for wandering stock and buffalo at night so maybe ripping along at 130 in the dark isn't such a smart thing to do. Just my 2 cents. |

NT Labor killed of speed derestriction (physically removed the signs and by legislation) in a fit of political correctness, effective January 1, 2007. They did the same to NSW under Wran, July 1979. VIC; late 60's. The speed derestriction sign has been removed from Australian Standard 1742.4 of 2009. This is an attempt by academia and state roads staffers, to prevent any parliament (a party as 'policy') from re-introducing the idea ever again in AUS). Notable speed derestriction remains in Germany and on the Isle Of Mann. A few other areas also, parts of Thailand South, Malaysia North, Iran, India. Even South American countries, a la remote Argentina still show the (//). PC British Transport employee imports to the island, have failed to introduce Britains (temporary) 70mph National Speed Limit, the Islands public voting up to 80% a determined NO to the speed limit. ("Temporary" is in UK legislation, and was imposed after the 74 Arab oil embargo on the west). The legislation has not been removed, yet. PC will see it not so is my guess. That means GB (//) signs will remain as National Maximum Speed Limit signs. But the signs are withdrawing from Brit roads. The Conservatives in GB did support an 80mph (130km/h) speed limit for its motorways in earlier electoral policy. To date, they have stopped funding for speed cameras, but time will tell if GB goes the way of EU and introduces EU's basic 130km/h freeway limit. Meanwhile in Switzerland, the campaign for an incease in its freeway limit, currently 120km/h, in favour of 140km/h, continues... Australia's freeways *WILL* remain at 110km/h for a few more years yet, but key intercity roads are being updated for that capability (ATSB Report). (median barrier/crossover U-Turn Bay 'gatelock' treatments, etc).

As in that you could drive flat out, with out disregard. you could back then get busted for many things even 110KM/H if the conditions were not safe. if you were towing a van there's a limit. if you exceed the speed rating on ya tyres. and it was up to the cops discretion of what he thought was safe and reasonable. Some people think it was as if like, it was law less. |

Dont be too quick to rule out open limits to return to NT. The Country Liberal party up there is wanting to reintroduce it back if they get elected. Having had an email conversation with a member of the party there, I would say its a dead set certainty if they win the next election.
There has been too much economic fall-out for isolated road houses and towns from car companies no longer using the NT as the worlds high-speed durability hub as well as the increase in fatalities since the derestriction was removed. |

imagine driving Sydney to Brisbane in a long straight flat featureless environment and you soon realise why they need higher limits than the east coast.

Even the 130 is fantastic and makes motoring along so much more enjoyable.

Here is a place to start: http://www.roadsafety.nt.gov.au/tran...ts/index.shtml, scroll to the bottom, there are statistics that go back further if you want them. So far to me there has been very little change, but this year that could change. I think it was January 2007 when the speed limit dropped to 130km/h

I figured out the percentage killed based on the total population of the country, and the two percentages were very similar. I think the German percentage was slightly lower. |

I thought the topic was about an open (or derestricted) speed limit in the NT.

In NT there is not much to run into. Most the odd bit of wildlife. If there was an open limit in NT that doesn't mean everyone has to do 160 all the time. People with common sense will only go as fast as they can based on thier car, time of day, etc. |

Bear in mind that derestriction, in the new format proposed should be safer than 130km/h,- which is simply giving folk something to 'drive at'; often come what may - owing complacency over time. All is not as it would first seem in expected fundamentals. (//) should mean fewer crashes, but you might expect BIG ones on occasion, but the number of serious crashes should be LESS than under a speed-limit, regardless of it being in the 100-130km/h range. (//) SEPARATES traffic, when you leave Germany and enter the hell hole we call Belgium with its 120km/h freeways, one thing is noticeable; "platoons" of vehicles form, just like in Australia. In driving, DIVORCE is good and is represented by (//), MARRIAGE = TAILGATING/SITTING TOO CLOSEand is represented by the speed-limit>> (90-130). MARRIAGE, for driving, is VERY, VERY BAD:-) REGARDLESS, places like NT and NW-WA always have had, and always will have a higher than average fatal crash rate perhead of population/per registered vehicle, and VKT's, owing that environment. CONSIDER ITS; we are heading for intelligent speed control, that will impact top speeds, regardless of allowance. Quote:
