Hi,
I have a yr 2000 ford cougar I recently bought. Been having a slight problem where there is a knocking sound when I accelerate from stationary position. The sound ceases once I go past gear 3. |

It sounds like a bearing issue......I was getting a clicking noise and it turned out to be the front CV stub axles and was fixed when I replaced them.
Get your mechanic to check it out.

I get all my parts shipped from here http://www.rockauto.com/ and can advise 2 x Half Shaft Axle Assemblies = U$230.00 + shipping = U$196 = Total U$427.00 plus A$200.00 for fitting. Not cheap but it had to be done.
Since this repair has been completed I am getting much better fuel consumption now showing on the read out as over 447km per tank. I know, I know it is just an average but it has been quite noticeable on the road that my fuel consumption has dropped substantially. If it is this problem you should hear a "clicking" noise when you drive next to a wall or solid road barrier. If you are not hearing this then it is some "other" problem. Let us know what happens.

I could be the rear trans mount or drive shafts too. Is that a continuous clicking sound or just intermittent knock sound? Before you buy anything its a good idea to find out the actual problem. Try driving in circles with steering full lock and see if the sound gets worse. Try both left and right. It should make more noise when you turn becoz thats when CV joints do their job. This way you will also know which one is gone. You can replace them individually means left inner, left outer, right inner, right outer and center shaft. If it is outer ones then you can get away cheaply. If it does the sound only in straight line it could be bearings or mounts.

Also check your sway bar links and the lower control arms. Those 1/2 shafts are available cheaper here then in the USA too & at least it they are not right you could return them.
I had a knock unknown, on acceleration, then cornering, turned out to be the sway bar ball link joints mainly but one wheel bearing was shot or on the way out that didn't help. |
