Default BFYB Sleepers

What's your opinion of a bang for your buck sleeper?

a Corolla with a twin cam 2L?
250x-flow Cortina?
turbo ED?

Im just throwing around possibilities for a ride to have fun in that wont cost the earth. Maybe something like an EB fairmont with a dev3HL kit fitted?

Or a late 80's Honda civic with a 2L vtec motor and manual fitted?

Dunno, not sure, but tell me your ideas.

It'd have to be a ford Shav. Look at your previous rides. You know you want to..
An EB would be the way to go.
Even an EB-S looks pretty neat and can be had surprisingly cheap these days.

Am I that predictable? Damn e

Yeah I dont think I could go past the thought of an EB-D manual with all the fruit under the bonnet. I reckon you could get away with it all for under 10k.

EA-ED turbo with std ride height, bonnet protectors, sun visor, and a bowling hat on the rear parcel shelf. Oh, and make sure you get a few badges from motoring organisations fitted up front with the number plate.

I'd probably go a Datsun 1600 (with the venetian blinds of course :hihi: ), then throw a 3.0L or a Nissan SR20-DET in it.

But the EB sounds good.

An 80s 325 BMW manual. No LSD could be a tho.

Dunno what the prices are like, but a neglected 265 Charger.

Forgive me if I have repeated myself (I have the feeling I have mentioned this before). I had a friend who had the ultimate sleeper. It was a Toyota Crown, circa 1983 or something.

Ugly as. Nobody would look at it twice, even the cops didn't notice. But fantastic suspension, worked engine with turbo, beaut tyres and brakes... blew everyone away at the lights. Schweet

My car's a sleeper, looks like shyte but boy does she fly! Looks can be deceiving. I wonder what it will be like when I fix her up. This is the rolla I'm talking about here btw! The EA is a big POS atm.

Many years ago a mate built a two door corolla with an all alloy V8 in it. I think that it was some kind of pommy V8.

White AU1 Forte 2nd hand for $8k and throw a turbo kit at it.

Oh, and leave the poxy wheel covers on for the maximum sleeper effect.

Is $10K your budget?

My EB came to about $10K but It didnt last very long, but it did embarrass a few HSV and FPV owners.

Best sleeper I have ever seen was a 1980 Toyota Corolla Wagon with a SR20DET(WORKED), it ran consistent 11.5's at Calder and rip one of the meanest burnouts i have ever seen.

True! The good thing about the E series, a complete Lowish K engine is only $500 or so.

My favourite choices would be:

- EB turbo
- R31 Pintara Wagon with rb30et (just need to get VL turbo conversion parts)
- Old skool corolla etc with sr20det would hammer but may be too $$$
- As above but an old bluebird with sr20det, i saw one the other night and made me want to get one, heard a massive flutter looked around nothing it goes off again oh its the bleubird mad :1syellow1 turned out to have a ca18det in it which could be another option.

Heres a website with some frontcuts might give you a guide to prices you'd be looking at for Jap engines

Peugeot 205gti + Peugeot 405 Mi16 donk, and you'd still have $2k or so for mods (if you get one of the cheaper ones, $4999 on carsales)

Screw any X/E/A series idea, do something *interesting*!!!!!!!!

For a true sleeper, there are a stack of options that really don't have to be Falcons. Consider something like an early 80's Mercedes SEL (any model with over 6L should be fine), or a non-RX7 rotary, an older inline 6 BMW 3-series, an imported Toyota Crown (they are RWD too!), or anything inconspicuous that has been modified already with money spent on it. It really depends on what you are after, whether it's a tidy sleeper or an insane beast in plain clothes.

thats it. Thats the thing with e-series cars, people have parts every where. They are comfortable to drive, relatively easy to work on, and cheap as chips if the bottom end gives up. Plus they look modern.

On the other hand, who would assume a stock looking white AU1 forte is a sleeper? That would really scare the crap outta a few HSV owners. :

They I would have it wouldnt be different from what you guys have already mentioned, but the only thing I would change is getting the stocko 15' steelies widened to accomodate bigger tyres for grip. You would get too far with ya 205's on boost from a standstill start I dont think. Then again an LSD would need to be invested in either way.

Yep a white AU1 forte wouldnt cost more than 7-8k in good nic. Slap on a ST1 or ST2 turbo kit from TSA. Invest in a LSD or spool and watch out, grandpa is coming!

The other option would be to do the above in an E-series car like a 4L ED with a 5 speed. It will keep the cost to below 10k thats for sure, and you could buy extra parts, motors etc to keep in the shed.

Thats my extra 2c worth

Methinks a mini fitted with twin R1 motors ,weighing 650kg and good for an 11 second 1/4 mile would be heaps fun to build and drive

Sorry to dig up this old thread.

Who here thinks a turbo XE would be a good proposition as a sleeper?
