Friend of mine was cleaning their window with metho and spilt the bottle. It has made a mess and stuffed up the interior badly (OR made some improvments to a Holden interior?)
Is there any chance it can be fixed or is it a case of replacing bits as its totally stuffed? He sent me the photos for an opinion and I havnt seen it in person! Word of warning though ....... DONT USE METHO IN THE CAR!!!!!! | [/url] |

a local detailer might be able to work some cosmetic magic... surgery might be required -_-;;
the pic of the stero unit looks like it has taken the paint off... a skilled tradesman such as myself could buff that getting lookin all shiny jk jk

Metho doesn't do that. It was probably mineral turps. Metho plus water is window cleaner and is what they used to clean vinyl records with.

Metho shouldn't melt plastic like that - watered down or neat. Turps will eat plastic every time.
Either your friend is mistaken or Holden dashboards are made from really dodgy plastic. As an experiment, wipe some metho on an un-needed CD cover, then wipe turps on it. You'll notice the difference. |

I wouls say the affected panels will need to be removed sanded, spray putty and re sprayed for a pro job, the dash itself may be fine even with some warm soapy water and a gentle dry wash them some trim detailer, overall looks messy but may not be as bad as he thinks all things cosidered.

Nope definately metho. Must be just cheap plastic spray job. Thanks Doc. Will pass that on and he can go and get some quotes. Should be covered by insurance?

It looks like the metho has eaten into previously used ArmorAll or dashboard rejuvenator. Maybe try reapplying one of them.

Holden interior bits are cheap, get him to check out what it will cost to replace all the affected bits, might be easier just doing that.

No....you have to buy a new surround. That stuff looks like it has eaten through.
I had to change mine in my Monaro....Ambi Pur leaked out....much worse than metho. |

It's the additives used to make it both unpalatable and poisonous aswell the dyes in it.
I've seen metho stain glass permantly, leaving blotches all over and just about impossible to remove. Metho contains whole heaps of crap in it and I would bother using it for cleaning because some batches can be really bad. |

from what i seen when i was working in cars , commodore plastic trim is pretty shitty and dosnt take much to damage. seen plenty of commos with the paint finish comming off like that.
it was a bit scary sometime working on them because everything is so brittle and marks easily as you have discovered. i recon the soft dash pad should be ok with a good scrub ,( i would use a damp microfibre cloth ) then go over the whole thing with armor all style protectant. the hard plastic parts will need some serious work or replacing. might be time to buy a real car. :

Nothing worse and thinking you are doing your car a favour and making it "pretty'', only to find out how bad things can turn ...... and expensive! Done that withs ome expensive car polishers as well. Thinking your doing something good but making things 10 times worse!

sue the metho company for not warning you that it can melt a cheap interior.
