Today in the Melbourne Herald-Sun, there is a double page survey which invites the public to give their opinion on Victorias road safety strategy.
The survey is also in this website: http://www.roadsafety.vic.gov.au/ Participants are asked by grading various statements from "Totally Disagree" to "Strongly Agree". Statements suggest for example whether you agree or disagree to lower speed limits, increasing the number of speed cameras, increasing the number of pedestrian crossings, increasing the length of 40 zones, speed limiting new cars to 140kph, motorcyclists wearing hi-vis clothing and front numberplates, increasing penalties, etc. Subject categories include speeding, drink driving, pedestrian, rural and regional, drugs, cyclists, young driver, motorcyclists, heavy vehicle, vehicle technology, older drivers, TAC and other safety issues. However the survey does not address at all IMO two main issues that cause road deaths: 1/ Driver Inattention; and 2/ Stupidity of drivers, pedestrians, cyclists etc. So if you have time, have your say in which way Victoria should head to reduce the toll and complete the survey. Somehow I think that this survey is probably going to be a waste of time anyway, the Government and road safety authorities will do what they think is best regardless. |
