Question How to tell the diffrence between a 351 and a 302 Clevland

Heys everyone,
I recently just brought a ZJ Fairlane its a 1979 model, and the guy who I brought it off is unsure wheather its a 351 or a 302 Clev, and I am unsure myself, Is there something on the motor that i can look at to see what it is, Besides looking at the crank, any1 that can help me would be good,
Thanks Rach

not really, only foolproof way to tell is to measure the stroke. never tried to do it myself, but ive heard people try and do it with a coathanger down the spark plug hole. 351 should be 3.5" and 302 is 3"

I think she knows its a clevo, its the CID she's after.

If the engine number on the block matches the compliance plate it is original engine. Simply get the engine code and check it.
T=351, P=302 and i think there is a B code for NSW 302's

The Windsor comment is incorrect, engines known as Windors have the top radiator hose exiting the inlet manifold usually horizontally (well on carbied engines at least).

Another way to check if you have only a bare block is the timing chain housing on clevelands is cast into the block and on windsors, this is a bolt on housing.

coat hanger or drop the sump.

Only two ways.

If the motor is original you can assume the stroke has not changed and the engine code on the complance plate is correct.

As Bent 8 said

B = 4.9 (NSW only)
T = 5.8 (All states)
P = 4.9 (All 'cept NSW)

I would huess it's a 302.

actualy there is one other very easy way, get engine top dead center remove distibuter and look down hole if its 351 u will c either 351 or 4ma or 4mab, and if u see nothing its a 302, youll have to look down towards the back of the distributer shaft hole, looking for the front crank weight, while turning motor over by hand cant remember witch direction, been a while, you will come across the flat cut out piece on the weight and a 351 stamp if ya lucky enough, let me know how you go, and anybody else out there, i have lots of easy ways off finding out things, crammed in me head. need to free up space.

The dizzy hold doesn't go down to the crank.

If it did you would see the nose of the crank.

The stamping is on the weight, further down.

His method is right, the markings are on the front journal counter weight which you can see through the dissy hole at TDC..

i think you can only see if it is a 4MA as you can see the stamping, you can't see if it has 302 or 351 cast into it
