Hmm, silver rocker cover. Not sure if that's original but the XW also came in a 3.6.

If you can, before you junk it take a couple more photos from other angles and post up all the engine numbers and casting marks and maybe someone experienced in the classics will be able to help.

with the grey rocker cover and green air cleaner I was reckoning 200cube (3.6ltr) but that's if its the original rocker cover for that motor , still recon this but could be a 250cube (4.1ltr) from memory the 250 got the red rocker cover and blue air cleaner
from memory air cleaner snout went to passenger shocky tower missing rubber hose of oil filler love the red oil bottle does it have the heater connected ? heater pipes should go thro the steel ring (bracket)on left shocky tower

An old trick is to photo copy your rego papers & license then post it to ford in Victoria. Being such an old engine they might not have any factory info on file but if they do then they should be able to give you the original factory info on that particular car.
Alternatively drive it to a local ford dealer & ask for the most senior guy in the workshop. Alternatively take lots of pics & show the mechanics. |

Hi Fella's, the air cleaner is actually blue under the green, it has the steel loop on the left side shock tower, the red container was for fuel to run the engine.I'm in moss vale nsw. I don't have any rego papers as it hasn't been rego'd for quite a while.

ARD1 = 1971 casting. either 200 or 250. pull plug and measure stroke.
If its 3.126" (79.4 mm), it's a 200 If its 3.910" (99.314 mm), it's a 250 Quote:
221 - 3.6 250 - 4.1

I agree on the 200 theory as well. Not many optioned up to the 250 early on.

i think that the 200s had blue rocker cover and the 250 had orange cover. the silver rocker cover would be off a 221cid which would have been the original engine in an XW (pretty sure the XW 188cid was blue) . from memory the breather cap is from 188 - 221 type engines as well.

Yeah, the casting code seems right, although I'm never sure whether that means it was cast in 1971, or designed in 1971? The “A” indicates it’s the first version…
Can you make out the engine number? It would be interesting to know what model it came from. So as a 71 engine, it’s a 200 or a 250 (as others have said.) Since it has been fitted to an XW, it’s possible they kept some original bits (or re-sprayed them) to cosmetically match the original engine. I would hazard a guess that this would be a 250 (1V) as otherwise I can’t see much point in the “upgrade.” Value wise, the most obvious point is that it is a log-head (1V) so unless somebody wants to do a really authentic rebuild, they’d want to ditch the head for at least a 2V. |

I took a plug out and it looks like it measures up as a 250. Thanks to everyone for their help in working it out. Pat.

It can only be a 200 or 250 from XY to XC as it has the later block casting with the larger water pump fitted from XYs on.
