I have no problems with Sam Surace teaching his kids to do burnouts in a controlled environment, but when he starts to assert automotive sports are safer than that of the hunting fraternity, my blood begins to boil! If you're going to sledge another group to bolster your weak claims Mr Sam Surace, at least be sure to get your facts straight!!! Hunting is widely regarded as one of the safest recreational activities. In addition to this, public land hunters have an impeccable safety record. https://googledrive.com/host/0B_xGYb.../NCIS-2012.pdf |

Yeh not sure I agree with everything he said but I don't see the harm in it as long as it's in a controlled environment and the kids understand that's the ONLY place they should be doing it.
In saying that the second video where the bloke is trying to lift the front of the car when the young chap is mid burnout is just stupid! |

Drove my first car when I was 7 and I survived. Some people need to get a life and the police should focus on some more important things like actually catching criminals...

More bottom feeder/ gutter trash journalism if you ask me.
When I was a kid I learned to drive on my dads lap from about 3 years old and I believe it made me a better driver cause i was always told what I was doing wrong and right. I have noticed when the news is a bit slow that day they pick on the automotive fraternity. |

Won't someone please think of the children.
Love they way they trot out the child safety experts who gasp in horror at the stupidity of the parents, for letting them do an activity that will basically never ever result in an injury. Skateboarding would be more dangerous for god's sake. |

My parents should have been locked up for letting me climb trees when I was a child. I could have seriously injured myself.
Police, politicians and the media are becoming more and more ridiculous and short sighted with their 'losing traction is unsafe' banner. Unfortunately the real danger is when drivers lose traction when they swerve to avoid something and don't know how to correct the situation, with tragic consequences. |

I saw the report on the news .. The bit that surprised me was the Police claiming that they could impound the car because of what he is allowing his children to do, even though it is on private land in a controlled environment!
Is that actually true .. Or are the cops just blowing smoke?

At least he isn't some welfare bludging druggo injecting in front of his kids, and teaching kids about cars at such a young age is only a good thing, means they will be better drivers when they come to getting their Ls/Ps.
Good on him, I wish my old man taught me how cars work at a young age. If that offends you go back to late sipping in Melbourne with your turtle neck jumper. |

This reminds me of when Steve Irwin took little baby bob in to the crocodile enclosure.
The only thing Sam did wrong here was letting the media get wind of his activities. I don't completely agree with Sams decision to allow his sons to do this BUT it will surely have a large bearing on their knowledge base as they mature & hit the road with a licence. Of course they will do burnouts when they're older, all youngsters do until they realize they are mortal....& have to by the tyres! I was told that knowledge is power, give your kids the benefit of your knowledge & this will empower them to make sensible decisions later in life. |

Next day, Today Tonight publicly disgraces father who never pays attention to his children, leaves them to their own devices, they spent their time googling inappropriate inter webs stuff, or learning how to bully others on Facebook, while getting fat eating rubbish food and not getting out exercising.
Oh hang on, that is all good and won't satisfy the internet journalists. Get back onto guys like this taking an interest in their kids. He ain't perfect, but he is trying.

Funny how so many people here had their first drives on their dads laps! Must admit I did as well about 50 years ago, taking turns with my older brother and sister. Came to an end when we passed a police car going the other way, Dad got such a fright.
I can see where Sam is coming from. His kids will no doubt be inheriting those GT's one day. So firstly he is making sure they get the passion well and truly, then ensure they know how to drive. Nothing worse than not having any kids interested in your toys when you eventually pass on, or get too old to enjoy them. |

despite his best attempts at defending and explaining his actions and interests , he came across as half baked. You start airing your laundry, expect criticism. Do what you want to do , keep it to yourself. No bad publicity , no harm done. Hey, do they make a stick figure sticker of kids doing burnouts in the MY FAMILY collection. |

Bah, a non news event, yeah so what some bogan teaches his kid to do burnouts in their driveway. Woopee, there are worse things out there to be concerned about, unless of course he is in a residential block and all the smoke and noise affects neighbours.
But if it is the child being the issue which is typical of all the Helen Lovejoys around, then jeez how many of us learnt to drive or drove (rode) a vehicle (bike, car, tractor, etc) when we were a kid on a farm or similar? Yeah the guy is a knob for putting it on youtube but there is a lot of that around lately.

I have no qualms at all about Sam's kids doing burnouts, although I'd hate to be their neighbours. I'm just embarrassed about how he portrayed Aussie car enthusiasts, as ESP said.

ACA is all over it now...some silly women who's knew someone who was killed by an out of control car is all fire and brimstone...
I guess we could, you know, have fathers that don't love there kids, kids that grow up on drugs and become thugs and steal...

The point being, don't sledge one recreational activity to justify the safety of another. Unless you're a sandal wearing, tree hugging, weed smoking hippy, the media will exploit the individuals involved and make us all look like a fool. I look forward to the day when the common dog Aussie understands that. Last edited by GTPChris; 06-02-2014 at 09:44 PM. |
