i believe it's 1 16-21 year old passenger, from what i heard. Yes as far as designated driving goes it's not smart, but as far as peer group pressure goes, it's a good thing. Far less likely for the newly licensed to show off if it's simply their mate or gf in the car.
Good, and bad points, none of which address the real issue, SKILL LEVEL.

This has been law in New Zealand for many years, as is a curfew on younger drivers.
Unfortunately either one didn't appear to have any impact on the road toll over there.

i believe it only affects people who have either:
1.) got their L's/P's after the selected DATE. and/or 2.) had their license suspended within the first 12 months my opinion on this is pretty neutral, yes I'd hate it if i was affected by the new law. But I have been affected by peer pressure and have suffered. |

The way it goes is, carry 2 or more under 15 and 2 or more over 22 so if ur a little younger in the group u should be right to shuttle ya older mates around if they are over 22, that's my understanding from my copper mate

In my personal opinion also, I think you'd be pretty stupid to drive your car to a party, even if you were designated. There is public transport for a reason.

NSW P-Plate laws say you can only carry one passenger under the age of 25 between 11pm and 6am. So here you can still carry a car load during the day. These are the most stupid laws that have been introduced to P-Platers, when they came into NSW a study showed that young drivers are more likely to be a designated driver for friends, so basically this law just results in more teens walking the streets waiting for a lift, or walking home, because their mate can longer be the designated driver for them due to the new laws. Drunk teens walking the streets just results in fights and vandalism. |

yeah i heard its for the 1st year only, its still a rule gone over board, just mean there will be more p-platers on the road
instead of me taking 4 friends who are 18 with me, now we have to take 3 cars and who ever recomended public transport, go catch a taxi or the train home from the citi one night and then tell me you would keep doing it with no problem... |

I was really opposed to this law when it was first bandied around as to me it simply meant there would be more p plate drivers on the roads but I think it has been implemented with some wisdom. It is only in the first year of your license and it is only for a certain age group i.e. You can still take your family, kids, brothers sisters to school etc. I do feel sorry for the person driving to the party who has had there ps for a year though, they will be stuck driving every week
The more interesting announcement for me and a massive step in the right direction which Bracks ridiculously held back is this one. Electronic stability control and side curtain airbags will become mandatory in all new cars over the next two to three years. That is massive news and the benefits will be seen within the next 10 years. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2...06/2155629.htm

Yea the rule may be a bit harsh and i know i felt the exact same way as SBR 1 earlier and now when you think about it there are plenty of car accidents that involve P platers and death. However i dont think putting P platers straight to that law is the thing to do YET... maybe if they do speed once or something then they should put in that law to the person. Not to ALL the P platers. Some are responsable drivers and shouldnt deserve to have this law put against them. Its insane! I also will have brothers to take to school and i will be restricted to do that. Still wont stop me from lookin forward to getting my Ps! 33 weeks 1 day! :

Just another stupid law by more people that have no idea. For a government that's always trying to get people to carpool, this makes it impossible for young drivers. Limiting passengers will do nothing to help the road toll. In fact it will put more cars on already congested roads, creating potentially more accidents. Only a very small percentage of accidents / fatalities are caused by hooning with a car load. Most accidents for young drivers are caused by lack of experience. Put more inexperienced drivers behind the wheel, and expect more accidents. Simple as that.

We have this law in NSW already. Just take your P plates off if ur worried. If you got a drunk mate(s) i'd rather cop the whatever than have them make their own way home.

It's just going to make 4 cars on the road all trying to beat each other to the same spot and trying to show there mates what they can do, so will cause more of a problem i feel. Instead of just having one idiot now your going to have 4 ?

Limiting or reducing the time young drivers spend driving is counter productive to them gaining experience isnt it???? and totaly at ods with the message the govt is trying to get accross about gaining experience (in a safe and responsible manner) on the roads. Quote:
Drunk or boisterous passengers in a car driven by an inexperienced driver is a recipe for disaster.

Yea thats alyways an option and yes yes taking care of mates like that woulde be far better than letting them wake up in a gutter for sure. What kind of fines would people get breaking these laws? Do you know? used:
