Hi guys,
Just wondering if anyone knows if the small pod filters that fit on the top of the block actually make a difference or if they're just a cosmetic thing? I've got an 03 fairmont and have seen a few similar models with them. Cheers |

I may have the details a little wrong but basically they filter out the oil in the fumes rather than have it go back into your air intake. No performance gain to be had. And illegal as your not allows to vent those fumes into the atmosphere which is what it's doing.
I think you can do it legally using a catch can set up

I'd holdout for a more in depth answer than mine so you understand it completely as I may not be technically correct in what it does but I do know that it's illegal and most guys go with the catch can set up instead which is basically the same except instead of using the filter you run it through a can which collects the excess oil. You have to remember to empty it though.

The breather on the valve cover is for blow by gas, i.e. exhaust that has gotten past the piston rings. Usually this gas is recycled by plumbing it back into the inlet manifold. Its even possible that a little bit of oil fumes might be good for keeping the inlet valves lubricated (just guessing on this one).
If the motor is new and tight and has very little blow by then there is nothing to be gained by venting it into the engine bay with one of those filters. Also this means that the fumes can come in through your heater and gas you. Catch cans are good if the fumes pick up a LOT of oil mist and carry it into the intake and dirty up the plugs. If your motor was really stuffed and had heaps of blow by then this could probably start to slow the car down if it was diluting the intake charge. One practical but completely illegal solution would be to put a longer hose on the breather and dump it somewhere under the car (which trucks seem to do) but preferably a bit further back. |
