I'm trying to find the name of a small Aussie sports car manufacturer but I can't find it on the interwebs. Can someone please help me?
They were at the Melb GP last year. They are based near Gippsland, Vic. The've got an Ariel Atom with an extended wheelbase/rear chassis and a tweaked supercharged Honda Civic engine running 600ish HP and modified aero (road registered). They also recently showed a higher powered version with a blown (or turbo?) Honda Accord engine (K24?) with a custom aluminium chassis that looks pretty zippy (big rear wing). Looks very similar formula to the Nota Fang F1 from the 1980's. There was a bit on them in Friday's Herald Sun Car guide.

Yikes.... insane power to weight.
Too pricy if you ask me. Big fan of the Lotus 7 / Clubman style racers, but this is a little too 'out there'.

Love it.
Can you legally drive these round the corner to get the bread and milk?

Yeah, road legal. Can't imagine it being a comfortable drive though. And 400k is a bit rich for what is at heart an accord engine

Accords don't do 0-100 km/h in 2.6 seconds though...

The rep here at the track was comparing it to the 1.2mill McLaren parked next to it. The $250K base model will still hose it in every performance aspect, let alone the $400K top spec one.

Plenty of 2.6 second 0-100 bikes?
Try a handful! Most are closer to 3.

True, but different adrenalin outlets...personally i'd feel a bit more safer with four wheels plated on the ground

Yeah you're right. Two wheels is much more fun!
Actually to be accelerating at that rate its usually only one wheel of the two on the ground while the other hovers!

What has pinning the throttle to accelerate as quickly as possible and safety got in common?

Would be interesting to know what their lap times were...... <600kg was their quoted dry weight. So add a bit more for liquids like water, brake fluid & oil (100ish kg?) and a driver (70kg = me).

But the the quantum does not weigh 800k or is a V8 or has a Ford badge or has heated cup holders or has a 500w stereo or has 5 seats and can tow a caravan or..............
The point was the 0 to 100 elapsed time and I replied that if that is the only criteria then there are other options. If you really want speed for $400k buy a Lancair fitted with a Walter turbine. It will do well over 400km/h legally in any state of Australia. The Quantam is an adrenaline toy for rich people. It is good that it has been designed and built here but it is hardly unique. The new Ariel Atom has similar performance for way less than $200k. |
