I watched this yesterday and I've gotta say some of the footage of the top of the mountain at Bathurst was hilarious. The only thing I didn't like was when they destroyed the public toilets, I thought that was a bit much. Other than that it was just a group of guys having fun, drinking and blowing off steam. As long as no-one got serious hurt then all good. The change a few years ago to a greater police presence, not being able to bring your own alcohol and paddock basher to burn and destroy was a bit harsh.

When the doco moved to focus on Bendigo I didn't realise it had such a hoon culture. Like most big country towns and cities I guess. The young bloke they interviewed at the end in Bendigo did annoy me a bit. Might have got the wrong impression but it seemed like he was happy "hooning" about on public roads. His mother didn't seem to care to much. If you want hoon about, and we all like a skid or handbrakie, do it in someone's paddock or at the track. You have no right to do this on public roads.

Also wasn't sure about the premise of the doco, that since they stopped a lot of the excessive drinking and car burning etc at Bathurst, it had increased in other areas of Australia e.g. Bendigo.

Worth watching though.

Makes me feel embarased to say that I live in Bendigo.

This was filmed many yr's ago, I knew of the producer that was rebuilding the coupe and wanted to shoot this, although the focus wasn't on hooning in Bendigo back then when I had heard about it, it was more about the Mountain and what goes on up there, obviously his direction changed a little.

hmm, it makes me wonder how long till they start cracking down on the old BNS ball..

i think the bendigo part is similar with that type/size of town. i know in murray bridge there is a similar culture only gotten worse since the police forced the closure of the autofest..

its lucky we still have the burnout comps at the speedway or id be scared to see what would be worried about what could start to happen on the street.

That was definitely interesting to watch, I had no idea that sort of stuff used to happen at Bathurst, I knew about the whole deal with the alcohol which I still find completely stupid.

I really don't have a problem with most of it but it's not something I would go and do because of some parts of it. The night wars, or whatever they called it, I find to be a little bit stupid, throwing flaming toilet rolls and fireworks (aimed at other people, I don't really have a problem if it's up in the sky) is just a thing that I see as it was a matter of time until someone did get injured badly. I'm sure lighting cars on fire and letting them burn out is just about as dangerous but I don't really see much of a problem with that.

I used to live in a small town pretty close to Bendigo and don't recall too much hooning but to be fair, I was a bit younger and I can sort of gather now that a few people I knew were a bit like that. It's not like it wasn't an issue before they banned all of this stuff happening at Bathurst but I think I can agree with the message of the documentary.

Bendigo has had a bit of a reputation for being hoonville for quite a few years now so there must be some truth to it, otherwise people wouldn't say it. Bendigo and Mildura are probably the two standout areas in Vic outside of Melbourne, in terms of their size and what goes on there.

Haven't been to Bathurst for the stay on the mountain since 1988.
To say it had degraded into anarchy is not too far off the mark.
Was a bit fair bit out of control in the eighties, but had got 100% worse by the looks of the video.
Some things never change like the toilets getting blown up.
Used to be one or two torched cars but not a dozen.
Authorites need to have some control up there, but not to take all the fun out of it.
Guess too much booze always causes problems.

interesting video, as far as bathurst on the hill, it could only have ended the way it did imo, having a bit of fun is one thing, but some of these guys where out of control.

There were some parts of it that made me laugh pretty hard. Watching drunk bogans hitting an already burnt out car with metal pipes for no apparent reason, the car was already knackered, they couldn't do any more damage to it. Then when they interviewed the young hoon in bendigo and they showed the front of his house and he had three beat up commodores parked side by side on the front lawn. Not a ford in sight. Then the block getting hit in the head with the flaming dunny roll, poor bugger.

That's the best doco on Hooning/Australian Car Culture i have ever seen. I do Sociology and Anthropology at uni as part of my Archaeology Degree, and this will be used for at least one assignment this coming semester. Thanks a lot for sharing mate! Will come in very handy.

It was interesting and funny, but damn, long bow to draw saying there was a unwritten code of behaviour keeping everyone safe. They were throwing petrol bombs at one another FFS.

Toilet block destruction was a turning point me thinks. The bogans went that bit too far.

Shame it's been completely shut down, but I do understand some kind of reaction was warranted, just not like what has happened recently. I personally found the behaviour towards women disgusting, and was left bemused the authorities took it upon themselves to erect a massive screen to play porn, that was strange.

Have to confess I kept thinking to myself "hope to Christ this doesn't get air time internationally!" just imagine if clarkson gets hold of it, or the Americans. Hahaha, they already think we're all backward, watching this, they'll think we're all animals. But worse.

Ive done plenty of stuff like in the doco in the confines of close mates, way out to buggery in the bush, and it was fun. But we cleaned the place up to be better than we found it every time, and we didn't leave car bodies scattered around like fallen leaves. Just imagine the aftermath on the mountain after three days...

The vomit shots, beer bongs and para blokes brings back fond, and painful memories.

An hour and a half I really enjoyed watching that doco, in a cringe filled kind of way. Thanks to then op for posting!

haha awesome!
And!!! I am in it it! Yeah, running past some burnt out wrecks!! (at about 6 min 30)

I was there in 93 (at age 16, brother 14), 94 and 95 up the top of the mountain with my brother and dad! I still remember all the flaming toilet roll fights, fireworks, chlorine bombs!!hmm and piles of burning cars!
I did some video too, we had a National M5 camera I think it was, a huge VHS camera! People thought we were from a tv station! have some cool footage ourselves!

I went back in 2000 and 2001 and the top of the mountain had changed :-( no more nuts fun like in the mid nineties!

Yep, er, no wonder I like to jump, speed, do burnouts, get sideways etc etc!
