some great stories in this thread. I am the same. the smart thing for me to do would be to get rid of my cars and upgrade to a modern car and focus all my energy on that (and sometimes I like to go on ebay and look at all the FGs and fantasize about having a car with power windows and air conditioning), but there's no way I could ever bring myself to part with my old faithfuls. too many good memories, they are like family now.

yes. the common theme seems to be memories… and the bonus that unlike their human counterparts, cars (technically…although there may be exceptions lol) won't leave you, won't cheat on you, won't run away, are pretty predictable and if a stack happens can *usually* be fixed. like a reliable comfort.

Zero sentiment. 50+ cars and 40+ bikes and couldnt give a rats about any of the actual machines. I do cherish the memories they have bought and people i have met because of them.

Can totally relate to all the stories in here about how you become "attached" to your car well beyond just being something to drive.
I used to buy and sell cars within 2 years when younger, never felt anything about giving it away other than excitement for the new machine. But have now had my BA Falcon Turbo for 7 years and counting. In that time of ownership has taken my daughter from the hospital after birth, for her first day at school and holidays, carried my mates to birthday functions/engagements/weddings, been through my divorce, kept me in one piece in two accidents which could have been much worse, etc etc. Just so many memories attached to this car that mightn't be such a big deal to others, but are very important to me. For the last few years it's given me some $$ trouble with repairs (and is heavy on fuel), so have basically been looking to upgrade in that time. But each time I find a car, get right to the point where it's time to make the decision, then.....back out, drive home and give the old girl a polish and wonder what on earth was I thinking!! ha. For what I would get for it now (probably only 7k or so) it simply isn't worth selling. I will buy another car to do the regular Ks in, but this one is going straight into the garage. Can totally relate to others who have done the same for their own personal reasons and experiences. |

I personally haven't been attached to any of my cars, but when i sold my ute in April my 2yr old son was devastated when the bloke drove away in it. He cried uncontrollably for 15mins and kept saying over and over again "Daddy's ute gone". It broke my heart to see him that upset over it. Even now he still brings it up, although he seems to have accepted it and it doesn't upset him anywhere near as much. Future car tragic right there.

Yeah I get a bit sentimental about my cars, even if I just buy it as a cheap car and tell myself I won't get attached or spend money on it, I usually come to like the car and make up reasons why I shouldn't sell it

I agree with you to a point, but i do think that people grow attached to the newer cars too. Especially if they have modded the car a bit (wheels, stereo, exhaust etc) My Buddy bought his first ever V8 brand new (GM though) and he has spent a fortune fixing it, he could have thrown the thing out and bought 2 new ones with the amount of problems he has had, but he wont get rid of it, he loves it too much

I could afford to buy a brand new car but Ive been driving my AU2 XR8 for over 7 years now and the
negative thoughts of selling/trading it cancels out any benefits of a new car in my mind and just puts me off. I just love it still. You know that feeling u have when u buy a new car and u wash and clean it every week, just enjoy looking at it all nice and clean ? I still have that. New cars might be faster, have more gadgets ,what ever. I dont give a ****. I want my old XR8. So yeah, Im sentimental. I also have a 68 Mustang that I have done a nut and bolt resto on , so I cant see myself selling either of them. EVER. The only question now is, which car are they gonna bury me in ? |

yea thread old as the hills but whatever
my last car was 440,000km XF ute with a decent amount of rust, no power steering, stuff-all grunt and probably to 99% of the population a hateful piece of ***** that should be burnt, but I loved the thing, and I still miss it, I love all my cars, even if it's a holden

I too owned an XF: my XF was my first car, an LPG powered ute and had clocked over 515000km. I still laugh when I think about the time I took the old girl to get dyno tuned: she clocked an impressive 33kW on the dyno!! As I now live and work overseas, I faced the decision on whether to sell my BFII Egas sedan. Not wanting to sell, I offered my car to the folks, who happily agreed to take my car. Honestly, it pains me to think that someone else will be servicing and working on my car...I might have to make an unscheduled trip back home to service her myself! |

We watched my old P-plater XY being trailered away from home last week.
Have had that car for over 20 years but it was way over time to move it on. Had a heap of memories wash over me as I looked over and under it for the last time. My daughter got all teary (and she never even saw it on the road!) but she knew how much I loved that car by how many stories she had heard. |

just from my personal experience, and this is just my own personal journey, from hearing stories of people having to move on cars due to a partner insisting, or some other such reason, I would say 'Stuff it, build another shed, whatever. do what you have to do to keep it' I aint having that on my head if its gone lol that would be damn cruel.

I moved a car on because my misses gave the the "choice"
Still miss the old girl.... You should have seen her when I bought another car a few months ago... It was priceless, she hates it, refuses to be in it, refuses to drive it.... So I guess some good came come out of it.... hehehehe

I bought my EA when I was 18... and still own it nearly 13 years later. It hasn't been without it's dramas though. I crashed it twice, I had a wheel fall off, it's been keyed, as when I had a dash swap go wrong, I cracked it and it stayed off the road for about 2 years. Even with the mechanical gremlins it's also had, and the thought of how much I would have spent on this car over the years I still love the old girl though. It needs work but every time I drive it, it still brings a smile to my face.

i was very sentimental about 1 car i owned.
it was an Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 twin spark. i jigged school to see it at the motor show and fell in love. i eventually bought 1 with low kms. beautiful car, was deep red with wood steering. had a lot of good memories with it but the biggest reason i was reluctant to sell it is because it looked after me for all the years i owned it. it never broke down, was always a fun drive and got me out of a few sticky situations with silly drivers. i knew every inch of that car and knew how to work on it like an Alfa mechanic. needed a bigger car as the family grew. so i replaced her with my BA XR8 so yes i miss her.

Dad gave me my ED back in 2006.
To most it's just another ED worth a few hundred. To me it's EVERYTHING and it means the world to me because my dad gave it to me and I'm quite attached to it now Years ago 20 year old cars were worth a few hundred to, they only go up and the amount of EAs EBs and EDs that are long gone now will just make the ones that last even better in years to come like every other falcon before them. Not as much but you get my drift. I sold my XD ESP when I got the ED and although the ESP is worth a heck more the ED craps all over it in every way. |

I shed a few tears when i sold my bronco couple months ago. Thing is i replaced it with a xh ute and hate it, the ute is being sold as it doesn't compare to my bronco, it's half the car my bronco was.
I am going to save up for another f-truck. I haven't been right since i sold my bronco feels like somethings missing in my life now, think it's caused a bit of depression actually. |

I haven't had many cars/bikes in my 30 odd years of driving, maybe 13 all up.
I get attached to my rides, hey I bought them because I wanted them in the first place. Us car nuts do have a tendency to love and care for our rides, not just drive them or treat them as a consumable like toasters. I've only traded in a ride twice on an upgrade, other than that I keep them going and get the last mile out of them - they usually end up getting tilt trayed to the wreckers as they're no good to anybody after I'm done with them. Yep, I'm sentimental about my rides, wouldn't have it any other way. I've been very lucky, never bought a 2nd hand lemon yet or regretted a purchase. I have had my moments where I've lost my patience working on them though! Cheers!

Haven't had the VZ long enough to grow an sentimental attachment to it yet, but sometimes I think back and think of how much I miss the old VL.
Probably because I had it almost a decade and it was car that I learnt how to drive in. |

I'm probably really young compared to most of you and as such don't have anywhere near as much time or experience with cars but I already feel sentimental about my previous car - an AU III XR6 ST in blueprint (if my username didn't already give it away).
The BFII is better in every single way but I would go back to the ST in a heartbeat if it popped up again.
