Q 1....The XK US connection has got me thinking did they (US) use this system from then on or did they stick with years

Q 2.... What was Ford US "bread and butter' cars from after the 50's Customline, did they go straight to Falcons and Mustangs. must have been a massive change of thinking.

Q 3... And where does the Galaxy fit in all this.

Thought I would ask here and not google it.

My us falcon is designated by year rather than model spec. The falcons were put in to be the compact cars the fairlanes the midsize and galaxies ltd were classed as full size that got changed around bit over the years.

The Galaxy range(and name) was introduced on Ford’s topline models from ‘58-‘61.It was essentially a marketing attempt to appeal to the excitement surrounding the Space Race @ the time.(nothing more than that) it was not associated with the Falcon.Cheers

AFAIK the XK code was derived from the name of the original US Falcon prototype which was called the "XK Thunderbird".

Also, GALAXIE as Ford use it is spelled with an 'IE' not a Y.

The Ford Galaxie was just the top of the line car in Aus and mainly all US car models come out in Sep the year before, so Sep build 1970 = 1971 a model. in Australia the Galaxies were made here from 1965 to 1967 and then fully imported but converted to LHD here and the year that the USA models came out we got around about 6 to 8 months later, so a Sep type model USA would come to Aus in July and go say July 1970 to July in 1971, but I don't think they got a Letter designation like our Falcons and Cortina's did. our Aussie built F100's don't have such Letter designation type as well sadly as it makes it easy to pin point truly what is what.

I can't think of hand a Escorts Letter designation or Transit truly VB or something I think they started with.

I thought the Transits were just mrk 1, mrk 11 etc etc, I had a 1970 mark 1 Transit motorhome.
Didn't realise Galaxie was the correct spelling until the last few posts.

It would be good to find out if there was rhyme or reason to the letter designation or was it a truly a random thing unless somebody who works/ worked at ford can shed some light we are probably just guessing.

Ok. Typically:

Its sequential .. XA, XB XC etc

When its a substantial platform or design change then it starts a new to demonstrate its new (or as in AU to BA to differentiate on purpose)

Avoid combinations close to competitors (you wouldn't see a VB Falcon)

Avoid potential offensive combinations or that may draw unwanted attention (FU Falcon has a nice ring but how many posts would there be here?)

Draw on heritage or other link to suit marketing (ie AU - .com.au Falcon).

Maybe limitations due to industry requirements - ie whole new model may mean need to smash test which is expensive and unwanted - Eg as in FG went to FGX

And sometimes on some models its just what the Product Marketing Analyst recommends.

If one takes notice of what is going on in the background (especially in the city's) in the old black and white American movies from pre WW2 on-wards you'll notice where all the oz cars be it Ford/Holden actually came from starting with the FX or whatever it was and the XK.

Chrysler/desoto/gm / and heaps of others looked like a FX only much larger and then oz models that followed after practically had a much earlier clone over there , same goes for Ford , all a lot larger but practically the same shape , the only shape or style i have not seen as yet is the XD fixed or repaired daily .

I have had such a laugh over the years with the Ford against Holden scenarios when both are American , just don't tell the bogans or you'll get bashed up .

Australian made and special was another real good laugh for me .

XK ,XM ,XP , XR , XT , XW , XY , XA , XB, XC , XD, XE, XF,

1960-1988 (nearly 28 years of X's over 13 model runs)

EA, EB, ED, EF , EL......Holden had a few E designations too.

1988- 1998 around a decade over 5 model runs .

AU

1998- 2002 . Four years over three different series designations.

BA , BF

2002- 2008 . Six years over two designations and updates ie BF II..

FG

2008- 2014 . Ended up two as we know , now defined by FG and FG II

and FGX from 2014 to 2016 culminating with the mighty Sprints .

Disregarding the various updates and Mk's etc and the ute/van designations such as the XG and XH etc , there were 23 different Falcon letter designations over the five principal letters ( X,E, A ,B and F) . Ive had two X's (XB and XE) also an EF , AU (still) , BA and now an FG so like many I've had the pleasure of owning all five primary letter designations . Cheers .

BF went to 2010 with the wagons, so thats 8 years.

Oh, and the X series went to 99 with the utes and panelvans following XF in XG and XH guise, so thats 39 years.

Considering both the fx(48-215) and the xk were both styled in america and the falcon built there its no suprise that in old american films you will either see the actual car in the falcons case or similiar vehicles in the fx's case. Ford didnt get a truly australian designed car until the xa as by that stage the us falcon was gone. As for ford sledging im cool with that. Not so much on the Brock sledging.
