Would be interested to see a profit per unit comparison of Triton vs Ranger. Triton exists on an evolved platform over many years and shares engines. Ranger is on a unique platform and has a unique engine and ford are about to switch gears and change it up soon with merging platforms etc. Profit difference would be minimal I reckon.

Hiluxes are everywhere.

They are the taxis of Thailand, except every passenger sits out the trayback which is fitted out with benches. It's even more fun when the driver starts driving very fast.

I was in Thailand last month, Ford Rangers and Toyota Hiluxes are pretty common.
It seems the fact they're manufactured locally in Thailand helps.
I wouldn't say that only Aussies share a love affair with these things despite what these journalists say.

The local TV commercials show Ford Rangers doing skids on sand and dirt.
That kind of stuff will never be aired on Aussie TV.

Unique engine? The 2.0 Ecoblue in shared with Transit, Mondeo, Edge etc.

Thailand is Rangers biggest selling market. They sell about 10,000 more a year there than they do here.

The same one it shared from Transit? The US Transit used it too I think. Not to mention the Troller from Brazil.

JAC do build passenger cars, but obviously none are sold in Australia. I'm pretty sure JAC do sell their light truck range here though, but only in QLD I believe?

JMC sell their Ute here, the Vigus, which kind of looks like the previous generation HiLux with a different front end, but sales are pretty low.

ZX Auto also had some presence in WA only, with the Grand Tiger, but I think that has gone pear shaped too. That was an old HiLux knockoff as well.

Foton actually have 3 carlines in Australia, the Tunland Ute, Sauvana SUV and the View Van - a knockoff HiAce. The Sauvana and View are way over priced, like mid $35,000 thousand and Foton won't even give any of the motoring sites a vehicle to test!

Geely and Chery no longer sell cars in Australia.

It’ll definitely make inroads from how on. ( price and a brand new model).

Quite a lot of love for the Triton. Spending time on idyllic beaches recently in a new auto diesel combo, it was a great package for a family. Seemed to float over the sand with ease. Its longer tray was good for boards to about 6'3" diagonally (roof racks required if longer, though) and the powertrain combo was powerful and without lag. A level of refinement it didn't have before? Previous experience with gave an agricultural impression - this one was good. That there is a wagon version (Paj Sport) is good too.

If you look at Mitsi's pricing, they are very competitive, offer a great amount of value, good 4wd system too. I think their diesels are reliable? 46K for entry level Pajero - not bad. Going into a time of reduced spending everywhere and reduced cash* (*actually, bank credit), they've soldiered on with their platforms, abolished what doesn't sell (sedans) and sold good products at good prices in the segments that are firing. Well done.

Petrol Territory and same quandry, replace with petrol AWD but what is there in the Terry price bracket? The Triton on the beaches was nice, but you aren't allowed to do that here (within 300km or so) and the carparks to the beaches are gravel at worst - so a good AWD that handles well makes most sense considering Alpine twisties for snow season and twisties on coastal roads. +1 for Aviator, but new Expedition also looks awesome!

Yep 'One Ford' an absolute failure with both new Explorer and Expedition still only LHD and no diesels even if they were... Mind you with the pricing we see on Edge I am not sure they would be competitive anyway...

Good points you make. As much as I love the Explorer, it wouldn't sell here, with a base model price tag of around $120K and no diesel.

Ford have run the figures and there's no payback for LHD development in the LHD counties.

One sales report mentioned the Triton numbers were high mainly due to a significant number of the older models being sold for significant discounts. Not due to the popularity of the new model, which they shouldn't have significant stocks of yet. Will be interesting to see if the higher sales figures carry through the next few months though. I'd assume discounting won't be as strong on the new model. They have priced it pretty aggressively though so people who want a cheap ute will look at it.

Boss do you know when the tax incentives for dual cab utes run out and in what way? That + softening construction could give their sales a good kick in the jewels.

There is a full technical description on the ato site

https://www.ato.gov.au/general/fring...gible_vehicles

Too technical for me , goes into curb weights and average weight of passengers in a deciding factor

Here's the skinny version,
Two conditions need to be met:
(a) Payload of at least 1 tonne or at least 8 passenger carrying

(b) If payload less than 1 Tonne, driver and passengers carrying load must not exceed remaining payload load.

Current model crew cabs have a maximum seating capacity of seven and, as such, could not qualify under the second limb of (a).

Single cab Utes with 1 tonne payload or more fits the non-FBT profile

Single Cab Ute with driver + 1 passenger (136 Kg) with at least 300 kg payload or more fits the non-FBT profile

Single Cab Ute with driver + 2 passenger (204 Kg) with at least 500 kg payload or more fits the non-FBT profile

Crew Cab Ute with driver + 4 passenger (340 Kg) with at least 700 kg payload or more fits the non-FBT profile

From the ruling:

20. Accordingly, provided that employee use of these dual cab vehicles in a particular FBT year is restricted to travel to and from work and any travel that is incidental to travel in the course of performing duties of employment, there will be no FBT liability.

That last part means not private use outside of work hours.

So I guess this is the real question, how many who own / lease duel cab utes claim part of them via ato and seeing that this rule is effective now will it impact the sales numbers of duel cabs and have company's now focusing on single cabs?

I know that at my work they are looking at how this FBT ruling will impact them and are considering scrapping duel cab rangers for single cab utes instead.

That's not a new rule, Non-FBT vehicles are only supposed to be used between home and work and whatever incidental business related dravel occurs while on the clock.

Same rules apply, can't use them to drive everywhere over the weekend. Larger companies are now using
in-vehicle monitoring to monitor drivers actions (acceleration, speed , sudden braking) as well as virtual
"fence" of 2 km perimeter over the weekend.
