If you have to ask the question, you wouldn't understand the answer.

10years old isn't old, I've got underpants made before 2004 hell both my kids were born before 2004 and ones still in primary school so its not old

IMHO, if you couldn't put your car on H Plates its not old.

So for me anything older than an XF I call old, but I don't start to like them until XC (that's my personal starting point doesn't have to be every ones but it has to at least have had a carby base model)

To apprecate an old car you got to drive it with the window down, and as Beige boy suggested vintage appropriate music helps

I haven't owned a old car myself yet... but hopefully in the future i can get a mach 1 stang or 429 boss.

saying that, at the end of owning my last car, my 2004 ba xr6, felt some what of an old car compared to my current car.

my BA had a roughish 4speed auto, with the I6 which had low down torque, add in the fact it had no traction control. It was a pig in the rain to drive, had to be careful not to give it too much, too early, or it would step out 45° side ways without grabbin any traction. So passing traffic on the highway could be some what interesting in the rain. Plus it was fun as when i want to play up, i just gave it bit and the tires would let go..

It had some go for what it had, it would beat older V8s, 6s and ricers. Not having to change up to 2nd til just before 80, would help me win when playin up, as they would lose ground changing to 2nd earlier then me, also flooring it just under 60, it would go from 4th to 1st, roar, the *** would sit down and then it would take off.. yep, it wasn't fast on gear changes but it was fun. It may not be old for you guys, but it was my first goodish car i had between the ages of 19 -26. Fun car, wasnt fast, but was fast enough to get in trouble. Lol.

Where my current car is faster, quickier/smoothier in gear changes and sticks to the road, and is really polished compared to the BA. But the BA was fun and enjoyable when wanting to play up and i wasnt so worried about breaking it... i love my 300 a lot, but sometimes the simplier car can be just as fun.

Cars dont age like underpants or people.

Could you imagine saying to your neighbour, I bought a new car, he says in response so did I. You open your garage to reveal a 2014 Fg falcon. He opens his roller door to reveal an Au falcon?

Would you think yep thats a new car? thats the test to determine if a car is new or old. Usually if its not the current model or superceded model its more than likely an old car. (for a newly released car such as VF commodore or FH Falcon, can probably consider two models previous as a new car)

Again not saying old cars are no good, just my opinion on how to determine if they are old.

A few months back my neighbour arrived home and walked around and wandered up my driveway and asked me if I had new car.
I said yep.
We spent the next hour looking at and talking about the XY I brought home that day.
Second hand but new for me.
And it’s the most fun car I’ve ever owned and at 75, I’ve owned a lot of new old ones.

If I had any of those the first thing that would disappear would be the carby and it would be getting retrofitted with central locking, power steering, A/C, a good stereo and a variant of EFI with electronic ignition.

None of this constant tuning crap with a screwdriver and replacing points in a distributor etc, EFI constantly adjusts itself depending on weather and elevation conditions etc.

Something basic like throttle body injection would do me, as long as its not fed by a carby.

I appreciate the effort that all car enthusiasts put into their cars of all types, era, shapes and sizes but 60s/70s stuff just doesn't do it for me, mate has a 1960s Compact Fairlane, and his old man has a 1970s Valliant ute, are they cool? Yes, there is a lot of effort gone into their two rides, I can respect that but not my cuppa tea.

1980s is the earliest I would go, I like a lot of 1980s Jap and Euro cars, 1990s to present time are my favourite era of cars. Love Toyota Supra TT/Nissan Skyline (GT-R editions only though).

Favourite Falcon has to be the T series, but only the series III ones with the 5.6L.

And yes an AU Falcon is old, once you start pushing 10 years that gets you in the old books for a car IMO.

New carby went on 5 years ago, (engine upgrade, nothing wrong with the old one) and it hasn't needed touching since. The points did disappear for a bigger spark however.

Hulk, methinks the issue here is YOUR definition of "old"?
According to the dictionary... Old is...

old
əʊld/
adjective
1.
having lived for a long time; no longer young.
"the old man lay propped up on cushions"
synonyms: elderly, mature, aged, older, senior, advanced in years, up in years, getting on; More...
made or built long ago.
"the old quarter of the town"
synonyms: historic, antiquated; More
antonyms: new, modern
possessed or used for a long time.
"he gave his old clothes away"
synonyms: worn, worn out, shabby, threadbare, holey, torn, frayed, patched, tattered, moth-eaten, ragged, yellowed; More
antonyms: new, fashionable, modern
USinformal
boring or tiresome,(hulk) especially as a result of repetition (hulk)or overfamiliarity.
"I wish she'd shut up—(hulk!)it's getting old"
2.
belonging to the past; former.
"valuation under the old rating system was inexact"
synonyms: bygone, past, former, olden, of old, remote, previous, early, earlier, earliest; More

In my opinion NONE of the above would apply to an AU?
However.... Heaps apply to you mate!

Too many people on here get too wound up on too little. If Hulk wants to call an AU old so be it. Compared to a 2014 Audi it is old.

I like older cars because they require drivers, not muppets that can turn a steering wheel.

There old and then there is just functionally inferior. The au is a good blend of an old car with a few of the modern must haves, efi, decent performance, air cond, abs, power steering!! Lol. Most importantly you can actually find parts for them.
Haha, you really have no clue do you? Let's say just add the power of your AU, to that of the Audi, add half again and then double it and you may be close. I recon I can pull three pug leads of the big block and still drive away from the AU on half throttle

The difference is the Audi is a euro puss box, the AU is a Tupperware container, the XB is a classic muscle car.....

I like looking under a bonnet, seeing neatness and order, and understanding what everything does. Not a bunch of random spaghetti that gets worse from model to model, as they hunt for a solution to some weird fault caused by their last "solution."
I understand the need for cars to get safer and cleaner (not greener, but cleaner) but sometimes I think we have just lost the plot and made things ridiculously complicated.

It used to be, if you had spark and fuel your engine would run. Now your engine stops or goes into "limp mode" becuase some random sensor sends an out of spec signal.

Aside from the really obvious things of style, noise and history- You know what I love?

That the cars remind me what was important. What should be important. These were built for the families etc of the day as are today's. Except when that's materialised and shoved into the confined space of a vehicle, that stuff really shows up.

I get in the XY, I don't have anywhere to plug my phone, I don't need to worry that the Bluetooth hasn't connected, that the climate control is a whole half a degree warmer than what I like (let alone what my wife's one is set at) because I don't even have an air con, I can light my smoke if I was that way inclined- have somewhere to ash it and even have little quarter windows to facilitate my habit, and I don't have anywhere to put my latte...

It's amazing how things have changed in forty odd years. The XY was before my time but when I drive it, I'm reminded of the simplicity of life and how great it can be.

People were never designed to be so stressed. We're sitting on the limiter I reckon. The cars are just absolute metaphors for their time.

My daily is a 65 Mustang Fastback. Same age as me. It's been my daily since late 2012 and I feel like everyday I'm going for a cruise, whether I'm stuck in traffic or on the freeway.
From a comfort and safety perspective, the car makes no sense at all as a daily driver however the smile it puts on my face makes up for any shortcomings. It's that smile and feel good factor which is why I like driving an old car.

I like driving my "old" GT because it's age and depreciation is the only way I could afford one. OK, so perhaps a 2011 model is not exactly old,but it's not brand new either.......and by the time I even consider parting with it, it might even qualify as old in a proper sense of the word.

Because of variety, and not just in regards to the car I drive. I don't exclusively read 2010s books, watch 2010s movies, or live in 2010s houses - nor even wear strictly 2010s clothing, or only listen to 2010s music... though those all play a part in my life.

Just like I enjoy 1930s sf, or futz about with 1990s laptops or 1970s computers, wear 1990s clothing, live in a house built in the 1800s and work in a factory built in the 1990s for a business founded in the 1970s - it's just part of drawing fully from life - and we all do it. We all CAME from the past.

I drive a 100km round-trip to work, sometimes, in a piece of machinery built almost half a century ago. The critical respect given to '60s music and films (yes, what survives is the good stuff and we can turn a blind eye to the bad that came and sunk quickly so let's not speak of that) or the design of the time is one thing; we bring it back and label as retro, and it's mixed into the new - but that's still a different experience to experiencing the real thing. Thank you Russell MorrisWith exceptions of course. New tyres are good

More specifically for me, I also like occasionally getting away from always-on hyper-connectedness. I've been online since the mid 1980s and I wouldn't have stayed unless I liked it, but there's still a lot to be said for downing the iPad and iPhone, leaving even a camera behind, and picking up those square-and-round FAMILY OF FINE CARS brass keys & turning over '60s technology to cruise off somewhere quiet - then turning the key back off and knowing everything is truly *off*.

I like it all, and part of that all is June 1969. That's why!

It's all relative.

To a 10yo kid someone who is 21 is old.

And someone who is 31 is really old.

I get it.. I explained why I still enjoy my old cars... im asking why others also enjoy it. They dont have to all be your reason in order to get it.

I still have not lifted the hood of the audi after a few hundred km. Tonight I installed a mini breather under the hood of the au.. parked a metre away from the audi.

However.... Heaps apply to you mate!
If someone told me they bought a new Falcon and it was an AU I'd chuckle and walk away.

You guys remind me of my grandparents.

THE TV IS NEW!

Has a reciept when they bought it in 1978.

Why wouldn't you like to own and drive an old car? They make a ton of sense as a second vehicle...you can have the most modern car, the most up to date, filled with all sorts of amazing features. But there's just something about being able to jump into something old for a bit of fun.
We could have chosen a nice little Hyundai or something as our second car, but we deliberately searched until we found the 1982 Celica. Same with the ute...we could have just bought some Hilux or something, but we wanted something old, V8 engined, and Australian...Ford, Holden, or Valiant, it didn't matter to us.

Our Celica? It's fun...it's reliable, it's easy to work on, it's easy to modify. It's got character...and that isn't a euphemism for "breaks down all the time".

Our WB ute? Once again, it's a bit of fun, it's easy to work on and modify, it's got character.

As the sticker I got printed up on the back window says: "Steel Body, Chrome Bumpers, Cast Iron Engine...Just As Nature Intended".

Anything Australian from the days of chrome bumpers is worth owning...

Again if you have to ask the question you don't understand

A an AU is NOT an old car it's a banger at best, it will be an old car but it's not yet, it's kind of middle ground.

As for why it's inexplicable and your only selling the experience short if you try

I still think there is a good blend of modern features and simplicity.

hailing a car from the 60s or 70s is a little bit like being envious of a caveman. Wobbly handling, no air cond, slow, lucky if it has a fm radio. Simplicity in life is one thing but the caveman wasnt better off either.

cars like the au are a great blend of substantial features and performance without the clutter of modern tech gizmos. But cars from 60s and 70s are like living like a caveman.

Dear Hulk,

If you have to ask, you will never know. If you know, you need only ask.

Think about that for a minute, or more, and get back to us.
