$20,000 medium to large car

Ok so things have changed with the MRS and I and we can no longer keep 3 cars. Im going to keep my 4x4 but sell her focus and my clubby and downsize to a medium size car for her. I would like something with a little performance as we will drive from Canberra to Melbourne quite often and i need overtaking power and something that is comfortable. I have looked at the VW golf and WRX in my price range, $20,000 to $25,000. Any suggestions?

I would keep the clubby and let her use it, but she is too scared to drive it because its manual and not easy to drive (modified)

What are they like power wise? i have heard a lot about them. My uncle had one and said he loved it. Reliability?

You say medium in your post, but medium to large in the title - if you go a large car, 20-25 grand will get you a near new XR6, heaps of warranty, 6 speed auto, very fuel efficient, great cruiser and plenty of power. As far as value is concerned you'd be nuts not to look at one.

I know mate, devastating really, it's been such a good car to me and i really do love it. Sealant is going great, still beading, everytime i wash her, she comes up immaculate again. XR5T has 162kw, quite a reasonable thing (and unique with the 5cyl), but didn't they only come out with Manual trans?

If you're looking at WRX's, then I'd also suggest checking out the Subi Liberty, plenty of versions with high enough performance, more space than the Impreza, and for the same sort of money.

Yeh i know i have contradicted myself there. The reason i am struggling to think about a big car is because if we do that i want to keep the clubby as its such a great cruiser, but she wont drive it. The xr6 is definitely awesome value for money, and if i go large that is number one on my list.

I can't say I would use WRX and comfortable on long trips in the same sentence as I own one. I drive down the coast and that's too long. Fun but not comfortable.

Another vote for a Subaru Forester XT. Relatively large. Spacious. Comfortable for long trips.

XR6 or Mondeo TDCI for comfort and power seem good choices. Another option might be a Honda Accord Euro if primarily driven by the MRS; reasonable power, comfortable and stylish and a true medium size car with great reliability.

if you're going to do much distance traveling you can't go past the XR6 for comfort. the highways are where they really shine
