Just wondering if anyone here has different shades of tint on the same car?
Sounds odd, but I am sure Ive seen many Territories with a darker shade of tint on the rear passenger and back windscreens. I understand that the front driver and passenger side should be a particular legal limit, and nothing on the front screen, but what about the rest? Thinking of mainly extra protection for the kids in the back.

On my old Territory I had 20 on the cargo area 30 on the back passanger doors and 35 on the front doors, very few people noticed even after I told them.

Commercial vehicles are allowed to have up to 20% on the rear windows but most passenger vehicles are limited to 35%.
The Focus RS came out of the factory with a privacy tint on the rear windows that would be about 20% or a little darker & would be illegal to put the same on the front windows so it can look odd like you can see in this pic |

Ha shameless focus opportunity. Very nice.
But thats pretty much it, I asked a tint place about it yesterday and they said it was illegal? I dont want limo style tint, and 35 on the front is good, but the rest I wasnt sure.

My old car had privacy glass on the rear. I reckon it would of been 20-25%
Don't know how they get away with it. |

Territory titanium, privacy on all rear windows and none on the front doors, (mine has legal tint on fronts) still looks ok.

Subaru has been doing privacy tint from the B pillar back for years and now a lot have followed suit including the Territory. I tinted the front side windows on my Subaru so have two different tints with the factory privacy tint on all rear windows.

Our 2011 Triton GLX-R twin cab has factory fitted "privacy glass" on the rear driver and passenger side doors, and also on the rear window. I don't know the percentage, but it looks a lot like that Focus up there in the picture. It's very very dark.
I had a cop question it, but when I pointed out to him it was factory, he said "the factory got it wrong" (coincidentally almost the very same comment I received from a cop about the "lane change" three-flash indicator feature on our last car, the G6E), but there wasn't much he could do about it. As far as I am aware, the regs state you can have glass as dark as you like on windows behind the driver, but to the side and forwards of the driver the darkest is 35%. That's why you see vans and delivery vehicles with rear side and rear windows painted over or with advertising plastered over them. |

Gee they both look good. I might just chicken out and keep the fronts 35 and the rear 20.

Did the same with the GMC
Darkest legal on the front windows, Rest you can see out but not in. Seems OK but would've liked a little darker on the fronts. (sun can still burn me) Cheers Steve

Correct me if im wrong but privacy tint isnt actually a film. Its embedded in the glass. It doesnt work as a tint either ie reflect/absorb sunlight. Its there purely for the privacy aspect.

This is correct, privacy glass offers no UV protection. You can have a clear film applied which does offer UV protection and works well.

I got 15% on front and back windows and 18% on the rear because the reception goes from there, but there is no difference.

I know in WA the regs changed July 1st last year, any vehicle with external rear facing mirrors can legally have 20% tint on windows behind the 'B' pillar, and 35% on the driver and passenger windows. We have 20% all round on our G6ET though. Has been stickered once for it though, wasnt a hard task to remove, refit etc

Yes when I did the GMC I said to whip the old tint off and apply the new, (without even looking)
he came back with "not likely" the tint is in the glass, so we put film over top to get darker, So I have tinted glass and film tint and still get sunburnt. Cheers Steve

I've got 18% all round. Excellent during the day. Can be a little dark in dim lit streets. I often put my front windows down at night when I'm unsure of a turn or area.

I don't know if this will be of any help but this is a before and after with 20%.
On a lighter coloured car the tint percentage might make it stand out more. Although you can still see the background through the glass in the first pic. (Sorry about the second pic, bad light, bad camera )

No our Citroen is black, and its a bloody glass house. 20% looks good but I might chicken out going 20 all around.
Thanks for the input guys.

In what way does Privacy glass offer UV protection? Everything ive read suggests it offers nothing in the form of UV protection. Well the glass does but the privacy bit doesnt add to what the glass does.
I have been wrong in the past and could be again.

Windscreens (front) provide 100-99% of UV protection thanks to the laminate between the two pieces of glass. Privacy tint from the figures I've seen always provides as much (if not more) UV protection than standard side window glass. I asked the question of Subaru and was quoted... 0% Front (windscreen) 20% Front Side 5% Rear Side (Privacy) (% = UV penetration) Edit: I dont claim to be window tint expert, this is just the info I have obtained through my own research Last edited by MAGPIE; 27-02-2014 at 06:11 PM. |
