Default Damaged vehicle auctions

I'm looking to buy a new work vehicle and I've been told that I can get a good bargain at the auctions of damaged vehicles.
I've looked at their site and there are a few repairable write offs with minimal damage. Getting the repairs done isn't the problem, but I've got a feeling that there might be dramas when I go to re-register the vehicle.

What kind of inspections will I need to get done?
Will I have to deal with a insurance company?

Any advice on this matter is much appreciated.

Thanks.
Cuz

I've been to a few of these damaged car auctions and haven't seen too many bargains. I reckon you could pick up a complete non-damaged one for the price to buy and repair. Even if you were a panelbeater/painter yourself and purchased all the parts needed at trade price or even second hand you'd be lucky to make any money if you were buying and fixing up for profit.

Shouldn't be any dramas getting the car registered again, you would get a receipt from the auction company and go to your local motor registry have it inspected and pay the rego fee (presuming it passes inspection) as well as transfer fees. No different really to buying a car from anywhere else.

No way, I've been to quite a few myself and seen some absolute bargains. like an regency au Fairmont with under 100k went for 4g and it had a few scratches, that's it. :

Redbook value of 99 AU Fairmont 6 cyl auto is $6,000 for private sale - by the time you paint a couple of panels and pay rego and transfer fees you would have to be getting pretty close to $6K.

Its starting to sound less and less like a good idea...

you need to keep all receipts of parts and panels you get for it ,due to the fact the whole idea of R /W is to stop midnight spares, also yes the RWC is seperate to the viv report which also has a hefty fee attached to it.still some real good bargains last time i went to one at Fowlers auction in Brisbane

In Qld there are 2 main classes of damaged vehicles at auctions.

A repairable write off gets a blue sticker and can be repaired and re registered. It must be inspected privately by a qualified inspector (not Queensland Transport) and certified safe, usually costs about $600 or more for inspection.

The second class is a Statutory Write Off, gets a red sticker and VIN is noted on the Written Off Vehicle Register or WOVR. These can never be re registered and are for wrecking only.

If your car has no sticker on the windscreen you can just fix it yourself, get a Safety Certificate and register it.

The reason these cars are there in the first place is because they are uneconomical to fix.

I get people bringing in wrecks for quotes, and they're shocked at the quote to fix them, thats why they where written off in the first place.

But if you can do the work yourself and know what you are getting into then its a different story i think. If it was a car for yourself and not one that you plan to onsell then it could work out ok?

With the viv's that are in vic now, theres no gaurentee that you'll even get write off rerego'd here now.
Not worth the hassle imo.

I dissagree, I'm a apprentice panel beater, at the start of last year, a workmate of mine got a VZ Commodore (when they were current) from Pickles Damaged auctions, for 6,5k... the car hadn't even traveled 40,000kms... he repaired it, slammed it, tints and mags for under 13k, and sold it off for a shade over 20k...
Was repaired with a complete 2nd hand front L section... chassis rail skirt and rad supt... can be done cheaply and easily...

a mate of mine bought his vz ss dunnydore ex chaser from the write off auctions last year after the local hwp lost the back end in the wet and reshaped it. he had to replace rear 1/4 panel diff all rear suspension wheels and all the panels where the cops had holes for the equipment.
don't know how much it all cost but being a mechanic and having "friends" in the trades i don't think he paid much on top of car purchase.

i don't think i'd buy a r/w to drive maybe for parts only

My uncle does that for a hobby, as he's a tow truck operator and has lots of friends in the repairs business.
He makes enough money from buying wrecks, fixing, and selling them that he could give up the towing.
