A nice repairable project F350 year 2005 sold at Manheim Perth for $10.5k today. It wasn't on VOWR since its GWM is above the limit, and it had fire damaged engine bay and dash, mostly on the passenger side.
I was trying to get it for a reasonable amount, (my limit was perhaps half of what it sold for). It would need replacing ALL rubber and plastic in the engine bay. Engine would be repairable with a new seal kit and new external components, new coolers, new wiring, new radiators etc. Biggest challenge would probably be to get the burnt smell out of the interior after replacing the headlining and dash. It would need new bonnet, new windscreen, new radiators, new HVAC, new wiring harnesses, new modules etc. I would have loved to build 'toughest in town' out of this with a 4-link lift kit on it, upgrade to 2016-front appearance, and some large wheels. I recon it would have been roughly a $45k vehicle if it wasn't burnt. It looked in good condition prior to the fire. Mileage wasn't visible. It would probably take some hundred hours to fix it, and maybe $10k in second hand parts. Anyway, it didn't go my way. I wonder if someone is rebuilding it, or if it was bought by a wrecker for dismantling? Cheers, |

The repair your talking would be closer to the 25-30k mark, it doesn’t sound like that bigger bargain considering it will always be a repaired writeoff and you tend to chase your tail with these jobs

With a fire damage it depends how many minutes it was burning, and in this case it seemed a quite light fire since things like the oil filter cup (plastic) on top of the engine was still there, just a little melted. The headlights looked like they still could be functional. The cooling fan was only melted on the upper half. The sheet metal would need ideally need replacing on the Left side of the engine bay, and the area around the windscreen wiper motor would also ideally need replacing, because sheet metal always warp somewhat when the paint has burnt away. Sandblasting and industrial primer stops rust for some years but perhaps not 'permanently', so replacing a couple of panels would have been better on this one. It would also been a risk if the engine was water damaged or not. After having a fire hose directed in under the bonnet it often fills up the engine with water. In this case the turbocharger air inlet was exposed, but I doubt the intercooler etc. had been filled all the way back to the intake, so with a quick preservation after the auction this one was probably ok. No - this one wouldn't have been 'repairable writeoff' It was a non-WOVR due to its size. Vehicles over certain size are not on the register. I always seem to spend more time than planned on repairs Yes I also deemed it not economical for myself to take on this one when its selling price started at 10k and went up a little (Plus auction fees, tow truck etc.), but if someone already have another F350 wreck to take parts from, then I think this one would be a good opportunity for them. There is also the factor that you could build a cool looking replica of a 10 year newer looking F350. Many does this conversion (ref. videos on Youtube) Cheers, |

F series parts would be easy to source and fairly cheap from the US.

This is like house restoration, if you don't know what you're doing and you need to
pay someone else to do it, then best to steer clear of it and save yourself a lot of grief I know beaters and wreckers that would jump all over it, put about $20K into it in used parts and labor (their own) and then sell it for $40K. They make on the labor they did as well as another $10K all for about a week's work tops. |
