In recent years FoMoCo have recommended 12 monthly service intervals. A number of factors have been behind this trend, namely, improvements in engine lubricants together with more advanced electronic Management systems. This thinking may look good as a marketing tool, but in practice is it the best for the oily bits of the engine. Ford appears to have some agreement with Caltex ( Chevron USA ) worldwide to use Caltex lubricants.
Are Caltex oils are the right fit for the Ecoboost engine, i.e., LZ Focus petrol. |

In the owners handbook there should be a Ford code for oil spec. It will look something like wss m2c 913d, or similar. A range of oils will meet this spec and have it listed on their website. Sometimes you have to dig a little but most are found easily enough. As long as the oil meets this spec, it's fine to use.

And 5-30 w is the most likely spec, not 15-40. |

VW has a specific spec - it's VW 502 from memory.
I provide my own oil as mechanic reckons they're all the same if done on time and all marketing etc (he's much car smarter than me but I'm not risking it). He's excellent on repairs we just disagree on oil! |
