Mk1 Escort Stationwagon

Morning, many years ago around the early 90s, I seen a magazine with a Mk1 Escort Stationwagon in it, could have been Street Machine or Fast Fours, not sure of the mag but I was wondering if anyone could tell me which mag it was and or if anyone has a copy, I know its a long shot but any information would be greatly appreciated. i am trying to find it for a non believer.

The Escort panel van was built in Aust & sold here in their 1000s, but the Estate (wagon) would've been a private import from the UK, or maybe NZ.

I have a photo of one from about 6 years ago at a small car show in Adelaide Hills.
First time I had seen one.
If I can find it I will post it up. Was probably posted here somewhere when I first took the photo.


As a religious Street machine reader since the early 80s, I have no memory of a feature. Could be wrong but possibly a different mag like the Fast 4s you mentioned

Do you mean a station wagon in the 4 door sense?
The estates/station wagons were 2 dr

The Estate can be 2 or 4 door, some of the early ones were 2 door, but mostly 4 door now

I've never seen or heard of a Mk1 Escort 4-door Estate (wagon). Do you have a pic ?

I said nothing about mk 1 escort, i was replying to the post above mine in which the reference of a estate can mean 2 or 4 door, as they still call them a estate today and they are predominantly 4 door.

Yeah, the smaller Estates (wagons) were often only 2-door, earlier on. Geminis, Escorts, Mazdas, Vivas etc.

As they got larger they became 4-doors.

As a young Ford dealer mechanic around 1970, saw plenty of MkI Escort PVs. I remember thinking they went pretty quick for an 1100cc motor, but realised they had a very low ratio rear axle (4.4:1 maybe?). So quick around town, what they were designed for, but would have been painful in the country.

I don't think I ever saw a wagon/estate.

I recall My first car was a MkII 1300 sport.

I fitted a 1600 with a cosworth Cam - very lumpy idle.. red line 7000 RPM
it could hit redline in 4th.

a friend had a brand new Honda CRX and My escort would beat it through 1st gear, but he was easily past be before we hit 100kph.

Not in Aust, AFAIK.

The closest would've been the XK-XP panel van which Ford called a sedan delivery.

Everyone else was talking about the escort, it's the topic of this thread.

Why would you assume I'm talking about any estate other than the escort?

Most estates and wagons are 4 dr of course! (or 5dr if you want to be pedantic which I assume you will be)

In your post above you referenced a difference between the station wagon as a 4 door and a estate/station wagon as a 2 door, so it sounds like you are saying that a wagon is a 4 door and a estate is a 2 door when they can be both, I know that with Mk 1 Escort they did not make a 4 door wagon or 4 door estate, but they did in other cars of the same era, they also made a MK2 2 door estate, and a 2 door MK3 and MK4 estate, but then they also made a 4 door estate in these later models

In the UK they do not call them station wagons at all, they only refer to them as estates, and all the estates were wagons of 2 or 4 door configuration no matter the year make or model, that is all I was referencing

Now not being pedantic as you say, but when you ask about a 4 door car when the vehicle they are talking about that they would have seen in the magazine would have been a 2 door wagon, as we know they did not make a 4 door one and you already knew this, then why ask?

I already knew that they did not make a 4 door MK1 escort estate so the question seemed odd, plus from your post its sounds like you are saying that a wagon is a 4 door, and a estate is a 2 door, when they are both, so thats why I commented on your post.

I was asking because the OP could have easily googled for an image of a 2 dr wagon. The fact that they were asking I was giving them the benefit of the doubt that they weren't that lazy and maybe the point of them asking is that they honestly believed they saw a 4dr mk1 escort once and was looking for that.
So I was asking them because if they were after a 2dr then that could be googled easier than joining up here to ask so the question was strange.

They could have possibly believed they saw a 4dr mk1 escort wagon once so they went to the effort of posting to chase proof. I wanted to ascertain their motive for asking. If they were chasing a pic of a 4dr mk1 wagon then we all know that wasn't possible. I couldn't see the point of asking about a vanilla 2dr wagon in a forum they had to join up to when they could have googled that?
