how are dash mats made?
Is it from basic material and a spray starch (Something your mother used on your sunday best shirts = stiff collar) or or Ive added a sun visor to my ICC screen and its put the existing dash mount out of alignment....so I thought it easier to design something from paper/cardboard then copy onto upholstery material then 'process' it so it stays in shape

I believe they’re slumped over a form by use of heat or hot air.

Because I dont protect my ute the same way as you matey.
![]() This is the 'visor' I mentioned. May look a little agricultural but it does what I hoped it would. Took several attempts with firm cardboard then some 1.6mm galv sheet metal bent and folded in the right places, some cheap carpet type stuff and it simply pushes into the gap between the dash and the screen. ![]() ![]()

that will be my last attack. Ive emailed the 3 better manufacturers of dash mats to see if they would do a one off from my measurements or what suggestions they can offer.
Theres a couple of DIYs on YTube that have grounds for thinking over.

I think the idea is sound, Tonz do you have a heat gun? Buy a scrap dash mat and experiment with slumping it over a form.
If you can get it to mould suitably, maybe have the piece overlocked and then slip it under your existing mat (which you would cut out and also overlock). |
