There was a lot of stylistic similarities between AU and S-Type. The doming of the roof both length and width ways, the tapering of each end of the side profile, similar door outline and construction (overlapping door frames), the side window line, the ovoid front and rear windscreens, the strong belt line running from front to rear, similar shape to the side repeaters and door handles.

Even the interiors shared the same layout to the gauge cluster, the steering wheel and a lot of the buttons. And then look at the front and rear suspensions.

Refuelling in Ceduna:

Bronze Wine XY GTHO
ZH Fairlane
White XW GT
Apollo Blue XB GS Fairmont

must've been a club run of sorts...

When the XY fired up it was literally the most inspiring car sound I heard going over the whole Nullarbor, up there with the thunder and lightning storm that went over when we were at the border the night before, what a magic sound, to think it was commonplace in Australia once...

Was it any of you guys?

While I do like the styling, especially in Biscay Blue with the chrome grill, its all about the sound. Not many V6's light my fire, but the oddball VR6 certainly does................

Fawn metallic HK Premier sedan in reasonable “survivor” condition and FULL REGO keeping up with traffic on Ryde Rd, West Pymble, midday today.

It’s good to see cars eligible for club plates, preferring to stay on full freight.

Old 70s Dodge pickup towing a trailer in Canberra today.
Sounded like it had an N/A diesel, was very loud and very slow.

Mowing on a busy corner this morning, I spotted a black AU Falcon approaching. On second glance, it turned out to be a T2 TE50! When was the last time you spotted a T-Series on the road, especially a T2. With less and less Windsor's on the road these days, it's been a while since I've heard one, and this TE50 with a subtle exhaust upgrade sounded so lush.

Of course, I had to go and find a few YouTube examples and stumbled across this one being slid around a small track.

Bit of an orphan this one as it only had a very short life span of 3yrs and wasnt a great seller in that time but Mitsubishi 380.

Always loved the TJ VRX I had 10yrs ago so when I happened upon a 1 owner 2008 380 series 3 VRX in silver with the rare manual, black leather and sunroof, I just had to buy it.
Turns out it was an ex Tonsley Employee's final lease car before they shut shop, so he ordered it with all the boxes ticked and when the lease ended he bought it outright.
203k's, Full on time dealer history.

With the exception of the Barra Turbo, the Mitsubishi 3.5 and 3.8 were arguably the best 6-cylinder engine of the local cars. Smooth, rorty sounding, decently quick. I remember driving a TL Magna Executive rental back in the day, was very impressed with how the engine sounded and performed, made the car feel quite pokey.

I'd give this a pass, torched them up very nicely...........................

I was thinking about the comparisons to the other locally made 6's and agree 100%.
Its no Barra Turbo but is as torquey as the NA Barra and delivers its power quite easily.
To drive it feels like a Commodore, you sit low go kart style but is comfy and compliant.
Then you have the trim and after 17yrs the leather is still holding up well despite no tint to keep the heat out, the seat bolsters are still intact as is the seat plastics, alot like Toyota durability.
Its got the sporty look of an XR6 or SV6 without the excess stick on plastics of an Aurion ZR.

So it feels, handles and looks like a blend of its fellow country built cars from its era.

I recently stumbled across a post regarding the 380 and the closing of the factory. A bunch of people kept saying the 380 was a piece of sh.t. and that's why it failed. No, it failed because Mitsubishi were told by head office to make a large sedan, in a market segment that was rapidly dying.

The vehicle itself was as good if not better than a Falcon or Commodore, and it was actually put together with what they called "toy tab" construction, which improved build consistency (cough, Ford Mustang panel gaps, cough). Sadly, it just wasn't the "right" vehicle. Apparently when the upgraded/re-tooled the factory for 380, they then had the ability to make any Mitsubishi product, but the powers that be insisted on a front wheel drive large sedan...................it never stood a chance.

I can almost guarantee those saying the 380 was sh.t are the sort still driving a VX Commodore Executive with SS wheels and a broken fuel flap, you know the sort.....................

It was 5 years too late, imagine if it had pip’d the BA to the market, it would have made quite a statement.
Being from NZ, I can remember the Diamanté was a popular used import from Japan, but they were usually the first of that shape (around 1995?), with a smaller 2.5 V6 and loaded with features. A VR/VS or EF/EL simply could not compete with them for the time as far as features, interior design and build quality goes.
The Aus/NZ market models sold new didn’t have the fruit the Jap models got off the top of my head.

I have to admit, I have a bit of a guilty desire of those softly sprung Jap fwd V6 sedans.
Around the same time Nissan launched the V6 Maxima with around 180kw. Also Honda Accord.
I actually wouldn’t mind trying out a late model V6 Accord, I suspect one would eat the miles quite easily, and they rev out to near 8000rpm.
Which reminds me of motoring journos always ready to stick the knife into a vehicle for having a soft ‘American’ ride. Do these ****s think everyone is track day-ing every week… Not everyone wants a rock hard ride when they’re driving relatively straight rutted up roads everyday.

I have fond memories of the 380 at work, they sounded and went well. Felt a bit cheap, especially the base models though.
But they were overshadowed by the Aurion which went like stink.

Subjective, but wasn't helped by it's looks IMHO. I took a 380 VRX for a test drive in that gold colour (was it a VRX i remember asking for one?) wasn't a bad thing to drive, driving past wingfield dump (this IS a true story) a gull dropped a can with some, um, 'ex dump' tuna still in it on the bonnet. I took it as a sign from above and didn't proceed . Though the yella Evo in the showroom took my fancy which i couldnt afford in the day.

You could say that about Falcon, Commodore and Camry/Aurion as well.

Ironically, all buy one hulk-like person actually used the full capability of the Aurion's engine, its power was wasted on everyone else.
