buying a taxi is buying trouble...a mate of mine owned an el falcon ex cab with 600k's on the dial.

Throughout 2 years he ended up changing EVERYTHING on the car and was nothing but a *****, constantly breaking down...from diff, tranny, MOTOR to all the minor electrics.

GOOD LUCK!

I agree with MYLO_XR6.

I had two taxis in the past. Worst discision ever. Constantly breaking down.

Head gasket, air cond, leaks, transmission, engine reco, faulty electrics. EVERYTHING. Not to mention dodgy fixes done by previous owners to get it back on the road asap.

Woudn't take one even if its for free. Too much hassel.

Look on ebay, thier always on there cheap.

Ex cabs are the best thing since sliced cheese. Any car Ive ever had, Ive always ended up changing EVERYTHING (bar the body and chassis) from interior trims, bodykit and paint to wheels, engine and driveline - For anyone like me, it gives you the perfect cheap starting point, and a good excuse to 'fix' (upgrade/modify) components when the other half asks "why"?

I have 3 people in line waiting to buy my ex taxi I took off the road last week
You can be number four if you like, but I am not selling it straight away as I gotta get myself another new set of wheels first

I have spent the last few days cleaning it up and making it a normal car, doesn't look too bad from 20 paces with a bit off a clean up

It does help to have some mechanical ability if you want to buy an ex-taxi as they will not last forever, but my cousins, brothers etc have all had previous ex taxis of mine as their first cars and got 2-3 years of cheap motoring out of them.

spend a bit more and get something decent. but thats my point of view though.. as what people said above ex-taxis can be an expensive exercise.

Cheers, Will

Instead of an ex taxi, you want an ex POLICE vehicle, although they get thrashed constantly, they also always get serviced reguarly and get properly maintained.

On the money there Mongoose. Although ex cabs in good nick are rare (my neighbours XF cab was one such mint cab), the copper cars are a better bet.

but you also pay alot more for cop cars. i want something that'll cost me $1500-2000 max, buying and getting the car reg'd. its gonna be a temporary work horse. i could use the xw, however i dont want to raise the back of it (been lowered a few inches) and i dont want to put the interior back in half done.

Check the trading post! Usually a few pop up in there. When I was lookin for cars they had a few AU taxis for $2500! And also e-series for around $1800-$2000

The misinformation about taxis here is ammusing. I don't know about the laws in Victoria, but here in NSW, you're better off buying a 700,000km old taxi then a 200,000km old private owned second hand Falcon. It will have A1 parts that people normally don't touch like suspension bushes and all sorts of little things, that do count in the end. Though they may look like they're falling apart, there are strict Government regulations that require them to be mechanically A1 and safe always. They are, after all, carrying people around 24/7.

Having owned an ex-taxi AU2 at the end of 2004 / start of 2005 (yes it was basically a taxi for only 1-2 years), I must say it was a dream to drive and the most reliable car I've ever owned, more so than my piece of rubbish BA XR6.

It had 350,000kms, never missed a beat, towed car trailers, out performed VY Commodore's, was very economical, thus fulfilling all my requirements.

Just stay away from the EF - AU1 ex taxi's, they really are trouble

ex taxi's are the best value, ive had two,my last EL turned over 1,030000 and had a miss in motor the whole 2 years i owned it, compression was low in two cylinders but it started first time every time and i towed tandem trail with car regulary, plenty of power for towing and cheap to run, i sold it last year and got another sitting in driveway that needs tank restamped, my old one has had 3 owners in last year and is still going as i saw it drive past me 3 days ago.cop cars get driven over gutters and flogged regulary, all have good and bad points but for less than $2200 with rego and rwc how can you go wrong,my new ex taxi goes harder on gas than my EL Fairmont Ghia on petrol with redback 2.5inch sports system and bigger air intake does.

bob351, i got your pm, i'm looking at getting one in a few months though, i'm just getting an idea of prices etc for now.

and steffo is correct, Taxi's have to be in good condition. most problems would just be driveline, which doesnt really worry me

Give TigaEL a try. He's got an AU2 extaxi for sale at 2k negotiable. Looks about as clean as a taxi is ever going to be.

Really though, if you're after a cheap run about grab a clean EF/EL gli/Futura from the auctions for about 1k and reg and RWC it.

At least you'll have a half decent car that doesn't have a million kays on it and doesn't smell like butt!

My uncle is currently selling his El Falcon ex-taxi. He is putting it on eBay. I'll post the link once its on there.

Then again, it depends on where you are. I'm talking Victoria.

I believe these went back to Ford, they were actually given to the taxi companies for nothing i think, as ford wanted to test them!

They were also the most unreliable taxi an operator would want
I have many details and images about these "test" vehicles.
