A start methinks… Though doesn’t go far enough? Example: doesn’t include heavy vehicles and also the list of exempt countries..

Never knew that we allowed people to hold overseas licenses perpetually from ANY country.....well that explains a lot!

Well, fun story, an irish guy i worked with flaunted his international licence for a while. So you'd lose it for serious stuff like drink driving but stuff like low range speeding it was only the fine for him not a points system, just the fine. When he got perminant residancy he had to convert to an australian licence. So just the knowledge test and the drivers test which he passed but.....
Well his prior infractions were now carried over to points. So australian drivers licence yes, an instant 6 months off driving for points loss, also yes. |

I Lived in Costa Rica for 5 odd years…
My aussie drivers license was only valid for my length of visa. And maximum allowed visa length is 90 days.. My get around was to leave the country and re-enter the same day: ie stamped passport and another 90 days (we were lucky we were only 120ks from Panama border. Once permanent residency is attained.. Which usually takes 3+ years, you have to apply for a Costa Rican drivers license… Your overseas one is invalid. You’d think most countries are similar?

I think anyone coming in from overseas should be required to pass a drivers test before getting a licence. You have 90 days to do it as well.
So many overseas drivers with poor driving skills just convert their licences without testing.

There should be NO international liscenses, only local testing and issuing.
Our roads have become third world. I propose we go a step further, introducing a Chain of Responsibility for driving instructors. If a liscenced driver does something REALLY stupid or illegal, we go back to the instructor asking how they passed the person in the first place. That should knock out the local instructors taking cash to pass their countrymen.

When I came back to Oz for a second time from Nz in 2007 I had a limited time period to apply (and was legally required) for a Queensland license. I didnt have to do a test and my license was then car and manual MR. It was only a short period. I could only drive on my Nz license for a short period couple of weeks or a month maybe. |

The alarms only go off when you transfer rego of a car to NSW linked to that licence. You could live in NSW for 20 years and no one will be bothered with it. Have never been told to convert to either state even given the written wording, no one questions it, the cops don't and even during Covid border closures. State licencing is a real grey area, especially when you are living on the road like the other 250 000 people on the Wallaby do. beauty of it is, I can buy, transfer registration NSW cars/trucks in my name, drive them around almost till they run out of rego, then transfer them straight to Victorian rego without a RWC. All my vehicles are registered in Vic. Also cheaper to hire cars with a NSW licence than Vic for some reason. Licences here should be Federal instead, would stop a lot of confusing BS.
