Australia new-car sales in October 2024: Toyota RAV4 on top again, but shrinking market puts yearly growth at risk Toyota RAV4 to the fore again in October, but its chances of catching the Ford Ranger to be the best-selling car in 2024 remain slim. Australia’s new-car sales in 2024 have now surpassed one million units with last month's sales data published today marking the second biggest October on record. Last month's sales of 99,969 units was a 6.4 per cent decrease over the same month in 2023, with the 106,809 recorded registrations last October a record. Overall, year-to-date (YTD) sales have crept over one million units, totalling 1,025,621 with two months of trading still to go. The YTD number puts 2024’s sales ahead of 2023’s pace over the same period, up 1.9 per cent and putting the market in a position to break new ground this calendar year, though predictions from industry insiders posit continued decreasing sales in the short-term future. The October 2024 sales figures listed here is sourced from VFACTS data published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), Australia's peak body for new-car brands, as well as Tesla and Polestar data distributed through the Electric Vehicle Council, as these brands no longer submit figures to the FCAI reports. It was again the RAV4 family SUV that topped the sales table in October – the fifth month it has done so in 2024 – with Toyota amassing 4841 new registrations, an increase of 86.3 per cent over the same month last year now that freer supply of the hybrid model is available. In second place, just 84 units behind, was the Ford Ranger on 4757 sales, a drop of 23.5 per cent year on year (YoY). And it was another Toyota rounding out the podium last month, with the HiLux ute finding 4523 new homes, a 21.6 per cent decrease over October in 2023. Only 318 units separated the top three positions last month, but overall, the Ford Ranger is primed to take out the best-selling nameplate again in 2024 with 53,119 YTD sales ahead of the second-place Toyota RAV4 (48,073) and arch-rival HiLux (46,594). In fourth place last month, the Ford Everest held off the Isuzu D-Max again, with the former on 2668 sales (+48 per cent YoY) and the latter on 2295 (-28.2 per cent YoY). Rounding out the top 10 last month were five SUVs, four of which were mid-sizers –the Kia Sportage (in a new record month), Mitsubishi Outlander, Mazda CX-5, and Hyundai Tucson with 2136, 1901, 1833, and 1803 sales respectively. And in 10th place was the Hyundai Kona on 1800 sales. In terms of brands, Toyota accounted for the lion’s share of volume with 18,471 sales – or 18.8 per cent of market share in October. Ford continued to sell well, outpacing Mazda and Hyundai with 8581 sales ahead of 7656 and 7086 respectively. Kia finished in fifth place with 6602 sales, while Mitsubishi and MG landed at sixth and seventh with 5590 and 5206 sales each. The final three Top 10 marques in October were Isuzu Ute (3651), GWM (3350), and Volkswagen (3279). Tesla, once a Top 10 brand, has suffered a significant sales decline this year amid cooling electric car interest, and its October result of 1464 sales put it in 18th place behind Chery (1448) and ahead of Lexus (1374). Maybe prospect of fronting up to the dealer once a week for a recall notice is not an attractive proposition?

Ford F-150- 247 Silverado 1500- 195 With the recalls F150 has had, Ford would have to be very happy with that, but in saying that, it’s a much better pick up than the other 2!

They don't have a choice, the recalls were because the conversion company didn't read the rule book and for whatever reason, Ford and/or the conversion company let them slip through into production. I can't believe the usually very competent local development Ford team let these silly little slip ups through into the saleable product.

I've been starting to see a couple of F150s lately but they have a lot of ground to catch up around here. I actually even manage to spot a Tundra fairly recently too.

ADRs are one of my pet hates, it’s also the reason why there’s added complication for Euro OEMs importing vehicles to our country, they have to change wiring and other stuff just enough to make our production builds a PITA requiring special runs of different parts. Send them all here and RMA can sort them out, slap $150,000 price tag on it and we'll buy them a couple hundred a month
I agree, ADR should completely disappear, if it's good enough for EU, USA, JP and SK then it's good enough for Australia, would give out consumers better choice and make it much easier for manufacturers to offer more range to our market. |

I think it's more a price point thing. The DS Quad cab was available for around $80k and the crew cab was mid $90's. Now the starting point for a DT is over $110k. So there has been a significant increase in the opening price and is now over that psychological $100k barrier.

Some sort of game theory where the buyer seems to lose out to higher prices but still, plenty of eager buyers for high series Utes and big pickups. OEMs are getting like oil cartels, setting prices and not really willing to undercut each other. Ther seems to be two levels of Utes, Ranger /Hilux and then everyone else priced lower… |

Interested to see this though, one images post 3500KG there's an issue with GVM/GCM where the Ranger sits as we speak - would need to move it closer to 4500kg GVM/8000kg GCM, which puts it in Jappo light truck class.

If I was towing 3500kg loads regularly and didn't want a cab-over truck I'd look at F-250 sized vehicles...having done it once jack-knifing using an underpowered/too-light tow vehicle not going there ever again.

Just goes to show, yes when you can get away with ripping customers off due to that lovely phrase of "supply & demand" imagine if they had just stuck to "normal pricing/normal increases" they would be more respected now and probably have less full yards, and maybe even made as much or more money. Even here in Oz I got a quote on replacing my Vito, bought in 2021 for $76K d/away and today's quote for the identical spec is $93K, 22% increase... |
