Default Ford Mustang Sedan - not a Mach E

Ford has filed to protect the Mach 4 nameplate in Australia, which could be used for a sedan version of the Mustang.

Is there any substance to this beyond the usual IP protection?

I guess time will tell. Given that the Mustang is a relatively popular niche, it could sell decently. It all depends on what powertrain and RRP. A detuned version of the Mustang GT engine (so that it doesnt outshine its 2 door counter part) could be doable I would think.

But they need to avoid the direction the Mach E went down.

It would be interesting to see if a V8 sedan under $100k will sell well in Australia. Sounds like a good idea…

Could you imagine what AWD would do for all those mustangs that crash leaving car meets?

Well they can’t retrofit AWD into bogan Commodores hitting light poles, so let’s wait and see.

I wonder if the Mach 4 trademark could be in reference to a hybrid AWD Mustang, as in a RWD combustion powertrain with front-drive using electric? Realistically, Ford had issues selling large sedans in a previous life (Taurus, Fusion and Falcon), what makes them think it will work now? Adding the Mustang name to the electric SUV hasn't really been a sell-out success either. Just leave the Mustang alone.

From what I understand S650 was going to have a Hybrid V8 4x4 system, but that was canned. I suspect this’ll be a 4WD 2 Door Hybrid Mustang Coupe

Every few years the RWD car guys get all excited when certain elements of the press bring
out snippets of info, sometimes with a quote from a CEO like Farley showing he’s open to the idea
but nothing ever really came of them…Ford was always more interested in other types of vehicles.
Maybe things have changed now that Mustang production volume is shrinking and Flat Rock
now needs another vehicle to build to justify the volumes required to keep it open…..

Rumour 1
Originally, someone saw Ford patents lodged for an electric front wheel drive system that
was intended for the Mustang which couldn’t support a sump mounted differential because
of its low ride height vs an SUV like the Aussie Territory.
People started linking this development to the 5.0 GT fitted with a hybrid 10-speed automatic
and rumours began to swirl that this version would replace the GT500 as the new top performance
Mustang variant……..then Ford released the new Supercharged GT500…..

Rumour 2
The story goes that S650 Mustang was an evolution of S550 but included changes to the
floorpan to accept the PHEV battery plus the other required hybrid driveline and electrical.
2.3 PHEV was supposed to join Mustang approximately 12 months after launch but was silently dropped…..

Now neither of these two vehicles eventuated but then they gained new traction when Jim Farley
apparently mentioned a Mustang four door was “on the way” but cannot find a direct quote. Last year,
some US dealer were shown sketches of various Mustang body styles including a sedan called Mach 4
an an off road coupe version as well……

Honestly, your guess is as good as mine but until then, I’ll believe it when I see it……
Hope springs eternal with names like Mach 4 being protected in our market, it would
be gut wrenching to see a competitor use the Mach 4 name and Ford get snookered….
